Hi all,
tell me something... Who pays for the strip down inspection on an airframe/engine following a serious incident/accident?
For eg: Lets say I have an EFATO. Rough landing in the sticks, and my trike is totalled. CAA decide to strip the engine to decide what happened. Does the pilot have to pay for this? If so can one insure against this?
Regards,

Re: CAA Strip down inspections?
normally the insurance company pays. if you are not insured then the strip down probably wont happen. you as pilot are not responsible for payment.

Re: CAA Strip down inspections?
At the moment your valid licence covers the cost of all accident investigations and Search and Rescue within SA borders. However Sandtjie White referred to rumblings about costs being apportioned to the pilot/owners in the case of gross negligence or misconduct. Not sure if this is any further
In the case of my good mate Ranger's accident a few years ago, the inspectors came down from JHB, we met them at the crash site, they inspected and we recovered the aircraft back to Cape Town. The inspector then requested the engine be started. In this case an AP was called and engine was prepped and started.
No money exchanged hands at all, the AP the CAA, or us. Everybody in this case accepted their own costs. Not saying that this is the norm, just the way we did it.
