THis is going to be an event of NOTE (excuse the punt JOHAN ) , But i think in terms of ending the year 2010 with like minded GYRO pilots and friends is going to be awesome .

LIke Johan was saying friendships are made and cemented on trips like this .

I would have liked to see every gyro flying in SA on the field but not possible , but we have to get to 60 atleast .

EBEN , raffle those RAF guys ( i can see they are up to the challenge )

Been speaking to a number of people about this trip.
Some are happy (and have experience) to do the JHB-Tempe-Gariep-Beaufort West-Worcestor-Stellenbosch route.
There is however a longer and possibly easier route which is JHB-Kimberly(or Jan Kempdorp)- Prieska- Brandvlei- Loeriesfontein-Vredendal-Stellenbosch route.
This second route has less mountains, less effect of the possible South Easter, with accommodation at Brandvlei. Fuel (if arranged beforehand can be made available at Jan Kempdorp, top up at Prieska from spare 20 liter cans, refuel at Brandvlei (airfield is across the road from the pump) accommodation and restaurant (Die Windpomp) is at the pump. Loeriesfontein fuel is available from Boet Loubser, Vredendal fuel is available. I would recommend this route for the less experienced.
Another possible route is via Kimberly to Carnarvon to Calvinia to Vredendal. Here you will get a slightly higher plateau and possibly more wind than a bit further north.
I have personally flown these routes and the only thing to really watch out for is the firing range at Alkantrant if you elect the Prieska stop.
The only real serious mountains are near Vanryhnsdorp where you go over the plateau. Along the coast is easy going (but has the possibility of a strong south easter against you, alternatively go via Clanwilliam/Piketberg area.
I also strongly suggest that people fly in smaller groups of 5 or 6 at a time and not one large group. It simply makes things easier for all.

Thank you for thinking of the less experienced pilots.
If all go well, I will have my license early next week (^^) , this will be a great start to fly with the big guns, taking advantage of their experience ## ##
If you fail.... get up and try again. That is the only way to succeed!

En dit is n lekker pad om te vlieg, is miskien biejtie ompad maar die moeite werd

## ## ALL PARTICIPANTS PLEASE NOTE ## ##
About a year ago I made a decision to fly high following the death of a close friend who was killed due to low flying. Make no mistake - I FLEW LOW BEFORE THAT!!!!
On the 8th of October I had to fly to Victoria West for a meeting on the 9th. I departed from Bara and at about 35 miles outbound, the engine started missing. Any miss on the engine does get my undivided attention. I elected to do a precautionary. On closer inspection, which included a run up everything seemed normal. I nevertheless elected to return to Bara.
At about 10 miles from Bara, the engine started missing again, as well as started to lose power. This time it was a forced landing which turned out to be no big deal as I had the height, speed and ideas.
It turned out that I had put a con rod through the block.
Coming back to the forced landing I worked out that at a 1000 feet AGL I had about 45 seconds before I hit the ground as the decent rate was at about 1500 feet per minute. More than enough time. If I was at 500 feet, I would have had 20 seconds.
Low flying has brought about more than it's fair share of accidents, the most recent one at Baltimore, Filipe a year ago, and the microlight that went into a tower in Natal a few months ago. These were fatal.
The moral of the story is that there are no power lines at a 1000 feet, you have plenty of height in hand, your speed can be managed and you will have ideas. Take any one of those out of the equation and you will be left with PROBLEMS.
Fly in groups of 5 or 6, stay in visual contact with your buddies, do not crowd the radio with engines rpm and fuel flow and irrelevant issues, avoid tight formation (it only makes you tired anyway), but above all STAY SAFE and avoid trouble at ALL COSTS.
You have one life, one last chance, never take a chance on that last chance as there is no reset button.

Ok gentlemen, this is crunch time. Your last "slapie" to make up your mind has arrived. Tomorrow 12h00 is D Day.Have 'n lekke doppie and go to bed. Dream about your gyro and what could be a great trip down to the fairest Cape. If gyro flying is for you... then this trippie will be for you.
Now here is the deal;
The names you see below are the guys who have said they are going from up North.WE STILL HAVE A GAP FOR ONE MORE GROUP OF 5 !!!
I have made up the groups from more or less the same airfields and areas.
There has been some guys who have said they would rather take the Kimberley/Carnavon/Calvinia/Vredendal /FASH route and others want to do the Gariepdam route. Some want to fly with this group and others with that group.
If one is realistic you must accept that it is impossible to organise for everyone to fly the route they want and with the gyronaughts they prefer to fly with.
As we will be flying in groups very well spaced by at least 30 minutes , I think that the best option would be to then allow guys to choose their own routes and flying buddies.
What we will do from our side is to put the 2 tried and tested routes on the forum. We will give a D Date and Time for guys to confirm their groups and routes. We will then organise the fuel at the fuel stops and accommodation at the overnight stop as well as the security to watch our gyros during the night.
If you are going but you do not respond then we will not be in a position to organise for you.You are most certainly more than very welcome to organise your own trip down. The idea behind this execise is to get as many gyros to FASH on the 20th.If we can assist in any way just shout and you will recieve all the info you need and assistance with your fuel and accommodation arrangements.
The initial idea of everyone flying the same route and meeting up at the same points does not seem feasable due to the many differences of opinions.
My e-mail once again is johan@noot.co.za
I will e-mail this post to all the names on my list and look forward to hearing from you guys.

So the d-date came and the d-date went. Going , going... gone... The big big gyroplane fly-in of the century is ON.
As predicted, the reaction from all the guys interested was overwhelming but... no takers for the planned group invasion of FASH. Not a single soul from the North is interested in joining a 'gaggle' BUT they still want to go on their own steam and organise their own story. The general consensus is that if they tie themselves down to the arrangements of a group and something happens to 'gooi a spanner in the works' they will have to be refunded any advance payments on accommodation and fuel.
Guys, this is no problem what so ever. I know from experience that decisions are normally made at the very last moment and then it will be easier for each guy to organise his own mates and bed and food and trip. As long as we all get down there in a grand showing from the North.
I will still be more than willing and happy to pass on any info re the route , fuel points and accommodation to guys who are interested and e-mail me at johan@noot.co.za
Most guys do have Easy Plan and would like to do their own planning which is a great excercise so "go for it!" Len Klopper can also assist with fueling points if you would like to contact him for advise.
I am joining Butch, Leo, Malcolm and possibly Richard from Tedderfield.
We are following the route from FATA to Hoopstad, FAKM , Carnavon ( Overnight). Then next day, Carnavon, Calvinia, Vredendal ( where we are collecting some more gyronaughts on our way to FASH) Moreesburg ( koes Thinus ) and FASH.
Plan your stuff and join up with a group of your fellow flyers and do this thing .The forecast weather for the Cape is perfect on the weekend of the 20th and for returning on the Sunday/ Monday. Rain is forecast for up here but it usually is a shower or 2 in the afternoons this time of the year.
SEE YA ALL IN STELLIES !!!!!!

Difficult question...any idea at what time on Friday you’ll be in the Swartland? I’m thinking that I should meet the gaggle in the air and join route to FASH!

Can't wait!
