MPL valid in OZ / NZ?

Postby DieselFan » Mon Jan 09, 2006 11:25 am

Hi all

Not sure if this has been asked before (I did try searching...).

If one had to immigrate or visit Australia / NZ would you have to redo the ENTIRE MPL? Are our SA licenses of any worth internationally?

I plan on taking an "extended holiday" within the next 24 months and wouldn't want to redo my MPL.

Thanks

I am busy packing for Peth as we speak. Will be able to give feedback wrt this within the next couple of weeks as I will be going through the process of getting my license down under as soon as possible. The feedback that I have had so far is that our license is valid - you just need a check flight with a local instructor and for your license to be endorsed by either the HGFA or the RA-Aus.

Our licences are good enough for Oz. All you do is apply for membership of either the Recreation Aircraft Australia Inc (RA Aus) or the Hanggliding Federation of Australia (HGFA) and get your licence endorsed by one of there CFIs. You might have to get additional cross country, passenger carrying and radio endorsements as well but once again this doesn't present a problem as once you have explained what our training curriculum covers, the guys are usually more than happy to award those additional endorsements to you. Unfortunately there are only two HGFA instructors in Western Australia (only about 30 trikes here as well) but masses on the East Coast.

There are a couple of Aquilla trikes here and I have met the owners already. One is a ex-SA dentist and the other an Aussie who bought his from his SA instructor, Mike Harold - who has since gone back to SA.

Only problem I have at the moment is finding hangarage for my baby. Lots of old timers around here who don't like flying garden furniture.

Folks,

I live in Australia - as correctly pointed out, a Check flight with a CFI is perhaps the most significant part of conversion. Presently I fly with RAAus (Recreational Aviation Australia). You can also join the HGFA. Both organisations cater for trikes (HGFA - hang gliders to trikes, RAAus - trikes to ultralights and Sports Category.

I have recently renewed my annual licence (pilot, passenger and crosscountry) which cost $145. Note that RAAus includes $1million third party liability as part of the fee - essential in this litigous society.

Be aware of the following endorsements and I am sure they will check for this with your MPL:
Pilot, passenger (pilot cert+5hrs+passenger test), cross-country (same as before + 5hrs cross country nav + multiple choice exam), Radio (just a multiple choice)

I am not sure if you have the above with your MPL? I did find the exams pretty basic - multiple choice and only test fundamental understanding.

Note the Aussie licence is mostly based upon flying ability and safety/emergency procedures.

Could you please advise on the requirements for Aussie Pilots visiting South Africa? My wife and I will be visiting RSA in late April and would love to get some air-time.

Regards

All ex-SAs in Aussie have been keeping a low profile after the dismal performance of Smithy and the lads. Here's hoping that the rugby boys can restore some respect - its tough having to grin and take all the hits in the pub from the locals about our cricket!
