Les,

Just a quick question. The pilots from Kroon (and others from North of the Magalies) will be coming in from the North, ie over Attridgeville. Judging from Google Earth it would be safer, ie. less built up areas and less congestion, if we approach from the North instead of flying all the way south to the ultra city and then turning north again where most of the other 'traffic' will already be routing.

Could we do it this way????

Thanks
Deon

I would think that the best would be to route to Gardener Ross Golf Estate (Ernie Els Golf Estate) and then east to the old JHB road and then land. Please make sure to fly over Ingwe airfield vhpy
That way you all can see where we are and then stop for coffee some time or another vhpy

The purpose of routing along Old Jhb is not to have too many pilots arriving from all directions and converging on SK. This may create a bit of a problem with conflicting flight directions. Please bear in mind that SK is an extremely long runway and thus the circuit is very large. I cannot see too many a/c having to hold back whilst the others are in the circuit to land. If you arrive there with a large group remember that we can shorten the landing circle with the outer circle having enough time to do the calls and positioning. I can foresee a unsafe situation developing with a/c approaching SK from multiple directions, hence the thinking behind the single approach route.

Pieter's idea is a very sound one i.e. approach from Attridgeville across Gardener Ross and slot into the approach from there. I don't think that it will be a huge disruption if you slot in a little closer to SK. Radio work will have to be sharpened so that all will know each other's position.

We do still have some time to sort out these issues, so!...please apply your minds and lets settle on a model that will work for all so that we do not have a situation that compromises anyone and safety.

Does this make sense? Your thoughts? :?:

I Agree with you Les,

We do not want misdirection or confusion especially with the amount of aircraft flying in. I agree with the point of making the landing circle smaller as we are all in aircraft weighing under 650kgs and do not need a long runway...thereby giving others time a space to join the circuit.

Hi all

I am also flying in from the north, north - west, and are looking at the 2 options as in the picture.
Would prefer the approch from the north, but will route south if required.

Where is the ultra-city or garage you are refering to ?? :)

Jaco

The South route that you have here on the picture is basically what I was refering to when I said route over Ernie Els and then just slot in over JHB road.
From Brits, route directly over Gyrotek the Atridgeville quarry and you will see the golf estate slightly to the right (about 2 miles), just go straight over the quarry untill you reach the N14, then east to JHB. The Ultra City is about 5 miles south of the N14 highway. I don't think you need to go all the way there

That is just my opinion

Enjoy the flight. I whish I could be there :( :( :( :(

I would think that trikes from the north and north-west should route via Gerotek then east along the Laudium ridge cross over on the Iscor Ridge and then aim east of Zwartkops for a right downwind 02. It is all largely open area (not built up) and will relieve congestion south and south-west of Zwartkops where the majority will be coming from.

Once on right downwind 02 (above the old military road past Snake Valley base), it should be easy to slot into finals between those coming in from the South.

Even those coming from the north-east can follow this once handed out by Wonderboom ATC, west of Wonderboom.

I think we should stick to the arrangements as agreed to between Les and the relevant ATC's:

"Have just returned from the meeting with the Swartkop manne. The rules are as follows:

Aircraft that are flying in from the EAST must contact Waterkloof ATC to be routed through the Pinedene corridor. Once Waterkloof has passed you on to Swartkop you must follow their instructions. If no answer from SK please route to SK via the OLD JOHANNESBURG Rd to SK.

Aircraft that are flying in from The West must route to SK via the Shell Ultra City along OLD JOHANNESBURG Rd to SK. Please follow the ATC instructions

Swartkop ATC will go on duty at 07:30. Any aircraft that arrive at the airfield BEFORE 07:30 are required to join at 5700ft-6300ft and conform to the circuit as follows:

Runway 20 Righthand circuit

Runway 02 Lefthand circuit.

Please be aware that landings before 07:30 MUST expedite unmanned procedures. All calls relevant to your position in the circuit MUST be made.[/i]Capt Kirsten at ATC has assured me that they will be kind to us regarding the landing and takeoff procedures and be Less rigid.

Tel no's: ATC Swartkop 012 351 2115
Waterkloof 012 672 3251

Frequencies: Swartkop 123.2
Waterkloof 124.1

Fly safe everyone and lets make this a day to remember for all the good reasons

Gates will open at 06:30

One correction. Lt Col Sheperd has informed me that the gates will open at 06:00 for spectators. If you wish to park inside a charge of R30.00 will be required(much safer) outside parking is free (^^)

Well done!
(^^)

I hope so!.... wx permitting. Would not have been possible without the co operation of every pilot that took the time and effort to completing and faxing three documents and committing to being there...... Thanks guys. (^^) (^^)

Hi there;

Is anyone leaving from Microland that I can fly in with? I have a hire-and-fly for an hour from 07:30 but I can try move that hour to earlier, or we could fly in afterwards - right? :) xxx

thanks....

It pains me to be writing this, but alas I will not be able to fly in as planned :(
I'm looking at my SAAF clearance and can't feel anything less than disappointment.
As much as I wanted to be part of this historic fly in, I am not ready.

I only got my license 2 weeks ago, and I still need to do a conversion to a Windlass before I can fly my plane.
Even if I managed to pull that off before the weekend, I still need some flying experience in my plane before I'm confident.
As much as I want to be part of it, I'm weighing up the risks and the fact that I don't know the performance of my plane, how it'll behave in turbulence (lets face it, the weather has given us plenty of that!), and how to deal with so much air traffic at an airfield, and all this while worrying about radio procedures in controlled airspace (**) It's just too risky for a rookie like me.

Sorry guys, but the fly in will have 1 less trike.
I will however be arriving at Zwartkops early by car. I can't miss out totally, even if I can't fly in.
Thanks for all your efforts in organizing Les. Maybe it can be arranged again sometime where I have some flying experience.

D2O,

Why dont you bum a ride with with of the " ou manne " and get first hand experience of what happens when doing all of the procedures etc. ITS ALWAYS BETTER IN THE AIR ! 8) 8)
This kind of flyin very seldom happens, so DONT miss out.... bum a ride.
( dont think that this will happen again !? )

Hope you decide to fly in as a pax ## ##
