Who would have believed - a happy ending after all....
The wheel has gone full circle. Wow! Anyone who has followed this saga will be aware that an affirmative shopper relieved me of my 296 and some peripherals about 14 months ago, and that up until about 4 weeks ago I had written off my considerable investment in my unit. An email from Garmin Cape Town asking me if I was the owner of a 296, then discussions with a potential purchaser who had met with the 'seller' and been savvy enough to get the GPS's serial number reawakened my interest in my loss, only for the possessor to go to ground and remove his ad from Gumtree. Lots of support, encouragement and offers of help followed from you wonderful AVCOM users, and I was left wishing that the 'wound' had never been opened, since the trail had vapourised and the ad had been removed.
Then.... an unexpected call first thing in the morning yesterday (Dave, sorry if I sounded half asleep when you called, I was!

) from a new player in the saga to say that he had my Garmin in hand, having bought same for his son who has his PPL, is involved in his night rating and needing a GPS for his cross country I (I thought you had to use vectors and maps

.) What a rollercoaster ride! He had bought the GPS from a gentleman in Edgemead (who shall remain nameless) the previous evening and, having taken custody of the unit, electronically transferred the R5000 asking price to said gentleman. On arriving home, he felt that something wasn't quite right and he went onto this and the microlighters forum (where I had divulged the S/N of the unit) and, to his considerable credit, ascertained that the unit had been stolen and was owned by me. Happily, he was able to instruct his bankers not to honour his payment in time, and was not out of pocket.
I obviously gave Dave the background and we met. I confirmed my credentials as owner of the unit, and the rest has became history. I spoke to the guy that sold the unit to Dave and, to his credit, he didn't become aggressive and obstructive, and accepted the fact that he had been 'had', and that he would need to pursue his rights against the party that sold the unit to him (all my rights are reserved at this stage!

)
In appreciation for the way Dave had handled the matter I offered him the unit, as a completely separate transaction, and at a substantially reduced price. My belief in humanity (and, in particular, the moral and ethical integrity of pilots, and those representing them) is intact.
Thank you to: Chris (you know who you are), Garmin (you have gone over and above the call of duty in my mind), Dave and all of the contributors to this and the AVCOM forum who showed a genuine and sincere interest in helping me to address my loss.
Thank you all!!!
