Pardon the ignorance but,

How many hours required for Gyro Licence?

Can any PPL hours count towards Gyro licence or is the only thing you can carry forward your radio Licence?

Not sure if you convert from PPL to GPL.

I have quite a few hours on a microlight, and getting 15 hours credit. The implication is that 10 hours duel minimum and 15 hours solo is required.

It would be best to contact Pierre or Willen at RAASA for confirmation.

Radio licence stays current.

If I read the RAASA requirements correctly, full training is required ie. 30 hrs for a gyro licence of which 15 hours must be solo. Even with a ATP, and thousands of hours of total time, I had to comply.

The nav exercise will probably be waived, and gyro engines, airframes, and principles of flight exam must be written, with a flight test at the end for the Gyro Licence.

Len (Jetranger) can confirm this.

Hi Gyro addicts!

I like saying that, as we have heard before, there is no rehab for gyro adicts. (^^) (^^)

This last week we have done quite a bit of training, and tommorrow it is the two exams, Priciples of Flight and Airframes and Engines.
Oom Johan van Gaareren rekons, I will be solo within the next hour or two.
The most amazing expierence this last week with the cold front coming, the wind was pumping at 20 knots, and the gyro takes it as it comes. I would not dare push the microlight out the hanger, but flying the gyro, it was absolutely a non event. Landing, a piece of cake. unbelieveble :!: :!:

It is a pity, I could have been flying this country long ago, if only.....
what the hell, We'll be doing it soon enough. (^^)

Glenn is quite right. The best we have been able to get is a 10 hour concession for a high-time comm pilot. So the minimum is 20 hours, 10 dual, 10 solo, Engines & Airframes and Principles of flight exam with a full flight test to obtain a GPL.

Shhh its a well kept secret!

Congratulations with your progress and I look forward to seeing you fly safely. Keep the Gyro flag flying high. !!!!

Yip. I'll do just that.
We did 2.4hrs today, tommorrow will be a bit different, Johan von Ludwigh will check me out to fly solo :!:
That is, If I can do everything perfect first time round. Else it will be back to circuits with oom Johan.
Today was very busy, first did the exams. The mock NPL exam had no questions that was in the real thing, plenty true/false and a couple of select the right answer.
Fortunatly I paid attention during ground school, and learned a lot from other gyro pilots on the forum ect. Only thing I had doubt about was "Undersling".
After the exam we did many touch and go's, some emergency procedure and that was it. When we did the full stop, oom Johan said, " jy het my bang gevlieg, Johan moet jou maar uit teken vir solo".
Now the real learning starts, something to look forward to (^^) (^^)

MPL Pilot, I have not met you but I like your attitude. "Now the real learning starts..." says a lot about your approach to flying and probably your ongoing 'airmanship'. May you never stop learning. 22 years on and I am STILL learning from better pilots than I will ever be... every day.

I would be honoured to be considered a member of "Sir" Jim Davis's Live Cowards Club since I have not yet stopped learning.

Keep it up!

Nou praat ons diesefde taal.

a Quiqk update, Jan and Jadri at Wagtail had me in stress mode to fly with Johan von Ludwigh, "make one mistake, and you'l be back with oom Johan". (Die wetters) they had me worked up for a while.
When we got to the solo flight today, the first take off wasn’t perfect, I wasn't sure which rudder did what for which direction after the nose wheel was of the ground (**) , when it came to the landing, it wasn't all that bad. But being worked up, with the first circuit, I knew, this was going to be tough.
Second take off was worse, when I was about to round out, speed was to low, and not having enough experience Johan gave the gyro full power to avoid a hard landing. I took over and landed.
I said to him, I know I’ve blown it, can we do a couple of circuits? I want to get used to this "under pressure" feeling and get control back where it belongs!
OK, so there we went, in my mind I figured, flying with oom Johan for a couple of hours would build more confidence. What the heck, it can't get worse than it is (**)
We did another two circuits, improving in leaps and bounds on take off and landing. When we stopped at the hanger, he asked how would I feel to go solo? I can not remember my exact words, but said, I would like to.
After refueling, mieliesak in the pax seat, off I went. Bliksim vhpy . Lekker lekker :!: :!: Take off was good, landing good. While waiting for the turbo to cool off after touch down, Johan asked if I would like to go again? What a question? Off I went.

That is the story of my first gyro solo.
I really appreciate oom Johan's, Johan von Ludwigh's and Johnny's patience and effort to get all the right info into my head. Now it is starting to pay off.

Congratulations and well done!

You're spoilt though, we don't allow students another circuit after the first solo. Then its time to go celebrate and let it all sink in. "Mieliesak in the back seat" ?? Thats cheating but a very good idea. I spend hours warning first time solo students how quickly the nose comes up and how fast it climbs... and how it simply doesnt want to land without the extra weight and noise coming from the other seat. Jy sien, ons leer al die tyd!

We flew past Wagtail on Saturday morning (did a low-level fly past and a wave) but couldn't land to say Hi since we were marginal on fuel to make New Tempe in an unfamiliar machine. Would have been great to pop in for a chat. Next time.

I am watching your progress closely and wish you well.

Rgds

You are right, although I must say the second time it was more enjoyable. There was no stress after the mental barrier was kicked is it's @ss.
I will carry on with solo on Moday. Have to spend some time at work as well.... sometimes, when I realy have to.
As soon as the UFO is ready, I'll have to get a PA or do something. Work will certainly be in the back seat of priorities.

Thank you for the encouragement everyone(^^)

This week has been hectic at work, flying had to take back seat until today.
So... after a circuit with Johan von Ludwigh, it was solo time again (^^) (^^)
It is an amazing experience to know, when I am in charge of the gyro, it will do exactly what the I command. With all the dynamic's of the rotor disk and innertia and what else, it could be flown easily. Just understanding the principle of flight, gives the pilot a major advantage. It is not like a microlight, aim, fight the wind, and kiss the ground after a gusty landing (**) I have done that at Plett airport December 2005.

Tomorrow, the next solo hour will be another great experience, doing a bit of a cross country, flying along the Vaaldam and up the river to Parys and back to wagtail ## ##
Something to look forward to (^^)
