What medical do you have? Class 4, Class 2, Class 1?
I have heard of pilots flying with diabetes. You have to wait for your body to stabilise and get used to diabetes but after that you should be fine.
My uncles friend is currently going through a similar thing but he has been told when it stabilises he will get his Class 2 medical back again.
I wold like to know more about this as i have only ever heard that its ok from other people, not the person himself or a doctor.
Would love to hear more about this.
Regards,
Ross

Trikenut.
Diabetes I would think would rule out any medical as diabetics suffer from coma's when their sugar levels go haywire. By law no fly with diabetic's or epelicts.

From the CAA website:

PROTOCOL ON DIABETES MELLITUS

Applicants with Diabetes Mellitus can be considered for certification, provided they

are controlled on diet alone, or with an oral hypoglycaemic agent.

1. Diet alone:

a. May be assessed as fit for all categories of licence, provided they have no cardiovascular, neurological, ophthalmological or renal complications of diabetes, or any condition which could result in sudden or subtle incapacitation while excercising the privileges of their licence.

b. Annual report from his treating physician stating that the diabetes is controlled on diet alone and that none of the above-mentioned complications are present.

2. Oral hypogycaemic agents:

a. May be assessed as fit for all categories of licence, provided they have no cardiovascular, neurological, ophthalmological or renal complications of diabetes, or any condition which could result in sudden or subtle incapacitation while excercising the privileges of their licence.

b. Criteria:

· No episode of hypoglycaemia requiring intervention by others in the past 12 months.

· Applicant must have proven hypoglycaemic awareness.

· Must have taken the oral hypoglycaemic agent for a minimum of 6 months, and the dosage should have been stable for at least 3 months.

· Must be evidence of stable blood glucose control for at least 3 months.

· Must not experience any adverse symptoms or effects from the oral hypoglycaemic agent.

· May not use any medication interacting with the oral hypoglycaemic agent.

· Aviation medical examinations will be conducted at the normal intervals, except in cases where the normal interval exceeds 1 year, in which case they will be conducted annually.

· Report from an endocrinologist / diabetologist (which will include a renal assessment), and an ophthalmological assessment on initial application, and annually thereafter.

· Blood glucose monitoring will be carried out using a reputable memory glucose meter, which is correctly calibrated. The glucose meter, together with a readily absorbable source of glucose, will be carried by the applicant while excercising the privileges of the licence.

· Class 1 applicants will carry the restriction "With a safety pilot".

Ian, spot on.

Pilots with a specific diabetes can fly.

Pilots with controlled eppilepsy after 2 years can fly.

IAM (Institute for Aviation Medicine) in Centurion, Pretoria probably have the best knowledge and say on this.(without rumours or hearsay).

Trikenut, your proff's daughter, is she hearsay or do we get to see a picture ? You know, talking without photo's ## ## ##
