Well done aviators!

Postby Alkemac » Wed Jul 07, 2010 12:49 pm

50 000 flights authorised during SWC

Johannesburg - South African skies have been kept buzzing over the FIFA World Cup with over 50 000 flight authorisations issued, the defence department said on Tuesday.
"To date 12 621 aircrew have been screened and 51 294 flight authorisations have been issued," said departmental spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini.

He said there had been few violations of flight regulations during this time, comprising "less than 0.1%" of flights authorised.

In the case of non-compliance, aircraft were sometimes prevented from taking off.

"In cases where aircraft were already airborne and a high state of security was required, violators were either requested to divert and land at airfields outside the secure area or were intercepted and then escorted where possible to a secure airport."

In periods where less security was required, planes were allowed to complete their flights.

On landing, action was taken such as refusing security screening codes to crew for future flights, court action or informing them on correct procedure to be followed in future.

"Aircraft were also intercepted as a precautionary measure in order to validate their aircraft registration and type when arriving from areas outside radar coverage."

More detailed statistics would be available after the World Cup.

Air space restrictions at the different venues were being removed once the last matches had been played there.

"The final restrictions will be lifted in the Gauteng area at the end of the tournament."

Since the flying restrictions, I have filed about 30 FAC applications and flight plans.

Just a note to the SAAF. The guys manning the call centres and issuing the FAC numbers did an excellent job (^^)
With every application, I got a response in about 10 to 15 minutes with my numbers. The guys were friendly and always helpfull. It was a pleasure to do business with the SAAF. Is it possible that the SAAF could take over SA Airlink (**) Maybe that will get the SAA to run a little better vhpy

Thanks SAAF for excellent service (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^) (^^)

Same here. Still a student, and had no problems getting FAC codes. The guys at the SAAF call center were really helpful, and the SAP on the ground at the airfield were great to chat with when not flying. Pity some of the FAC codes I never used cause of the weather! (**)

I agree, after many FAC's and flightplan filings during the SWC I have to compliment and join the chorus of praises for the SAAF and ATNS and commiserate with the poor SAPS guys that have to sit at the fields 24/7.

I think it has been most useful in forcing some reluctant students (and some high time Microlight & Gyro pilots) to interract with ATNS and the SAAF. One even commented that he now understands that they (Air Traffic Ops) are there to assist us rather than us being policed by them - which was the way he always perceived it. Even though the workload must have been horrendous, they always had time to assist and genuinely sounded like they were enjoying what they were doing.

I asked "If there are two aircraft flying on one flight plan, do we need two FAC's?" After a brief chat with his supervisor, since this was his first question of this nature, he said we needed 2 FAC's and to quote them after RMK/ in the comments of the flight plan. Impressively, he then asked for the call sign and SSC of the other aircraft (which I had in anticipation) and promptly gave me another FAC there and then! Wow!

All round a good experience out of the world cup. SAAF and ATNS helped me FEEL it!

I must agree with what you guys have said , but - yes but , I find it strange that the SAPS can send two officers , not abel constables to airfields and in some cases even three or four , each with his own vehicle from 6 in the morning till 18h00 the evening and then a place like Microland no ane at all . Try calling them to a crime scene ??? sorry no transport available ???
I rest my case - Leprachaun.
