Free to air satellite channel info

Postby Kingfisher » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:09 am

I recently bought myself a free to air satellite receiver & dish, amazing what channels you get for free on the
Panamsat/Intelsat 7/10 network. Even LM Radio is back on air, takes me back a long time with their music.
Are there any other satellites available with a footprint over S.A. with more (understandable) channels ?
If so, please share your expertise about dish sizes, direction etc. with the rest of us that are new in the game.

Available Tv channels, Kruiskyk, God Tv, Hope Channel, Eden Life, Spirit World Channel, Daystar, Christian Television - all Christian channels
Mindset Health, Mindset Learning, Skynews, Pep stores & Mr Price etc advertising/inhouse radio channels, Press Tv,
Botswana Tv etc.
In total about 43 extra tv channels.
All SABC TV & Radio channels + many extras like Radio Pretoria, Trans World Radio & LM Radio etc.
Equipment from Ellies, works on the Panamsat 7/10 satellite @ 68.5°E where Dstv comes from.
Other satellites are available on the receiver, I just need to find out what is broadcast from where over S.A., I suspect
there are more than these mentioned, by using extra dishes to other satellites.

Mine's bigger, recently put up a 7m+ diameter, although I didn't have to pay for it, work did.

Hooked up my FTA receiver which I brought from the UK to the DSTV dish bolted to my new house. Only got BTV and France24 of interest. Where is SABC broadcast FTA??

Go to www.lyngsat.com , all the relevant satellite info is on there. Find the relevant satellite, it gives you all
the frequencies, polirization, symbol rates + FEC if needed.
Small dish > 1.2m = KU band (Dstv 60cm / Top Tv 88 - 90cm)
Big dish - 1.8m + = C band
Make sure you have the correct LNB setting on your decoder. Look for universal LNB 10.7
After you set up all the correct FTA frequencies for the PAS 7/10 found on the site, you may have to scan the satellite first to see the channels. The decoder's preset info may be outdated, or it may have been pre programmed for the UK.
PAS 7/10 are where most channels are and they are one dregree appart so we can pick up both on one dish.

Ps. Your BIGGER dish just works on a lower frequency band .......

Thanks Kingfisher

But I actually wanted someone to confirm that SABC is free to air. From Lyngsat or elsewhere I have not seen SABC being FTA.

And nope the 7m is for X-band we've got a few at 13m diameter for the 'lower frequency'...

There are different sets of SABC channels on PAS 7/10, some are encoded and some are not, even though the lyngsat info may say so. You will have to scan all channels and not just FTA. It does come up as open air channels.
The correct frequency is 11674, V, Symbol rate 26652, FEC not relevant on my decoder - check on lyngsat
I suspect they will all be encoded once the SABC moves to the digital broadcast around November 2011, when you will need a decoder for all SABC channels, possible including E Tv.
Up to then you can still watch it with the other FTA channels (and hopefully after).
