Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
Wargames, can you tolerate ZU-EXP joining you for wheels up at 08h00 on Saturday? I have fitted an appropriate airbrake.

Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
Wargames, which way are you going route? Coastwise and 'jump' over the water or inland? Could you please give us an intro into the correct procedures (like the intro you gave on flightplans a while back), ie. when to call Langebaanweg, what to tell them, etc.? I could use a refresher, my radio course was a long-long time ago and haven't been up that way yet. Thanks!
For Saldanha approach, this info is up-to-date, right? http://www.wcftc.co.za/approach.html
Routing from Diemerskraal, I think, the best for me is to take a direct heading and join up with you along the way if I can. See not much benefit in waiting for each other and wasting time/fuel. I'm aiming at wheels up 0745 to get a bit of a head start
Cheers,
V.

Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
V, when about 2 miles S of Langebaan CTR (you should see the SE tip of Langebaan Lagoon and will have to proceed to Saldanha E of the Lagoon) call Langebaan on 122.5 with a "langebaan this is ???, Good Morning" They will then answer and let them know your position, altitude and intentions. They will then let you know about other traffic in the area, QNH etc.., and probably ask you to report when you have FASD in sight, and request you to change freq to 122.7.
Cheers

Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
Why don't we all meet at darling Cellars ( 33°27'3.95"S 18°31'52.34"E)??
V, you are about 23 miles from Darling cellars, and morningstar about 21. Wintervogel about 15 miles. If we all do a wheels up at 8h00, we can meet there and do wheels up at darling at about 8h40, or as soon as everyone is there.
Opinions??

Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
V, for langebaan weg, the easiest reporting point is to fly strait to 2miles south of southern tip of lagoon, and then call langebaanweg on 122.5. As it will be saturday, just call "Langebaan approach, ABC g'day". If no answer, just continue unmanned.V wrote:Wargames, which way are you going route? Coastwise and 'jump' over the water or inland? If they are there, they will say: "ABC go ahead"
You: "ABC 1500ft 2 miles south of lagoon, routing fasd, ABC"
FALW: "ABC QNH 10??, report town of langebaan"
You: "QNH 10??, report town of langebaan, ABC"
And so on and so forth.
Then, when over the harbour you can switch to 122.7 for saldanha, and follow procedures as set out in their website.
Hope this makes sense.

Great idea! Please pm me your cell number, just in case something comes up and I can't get into the air I can let you know. In the air I'm ZS-WHM.Wargames wrote:Why don't we all meet at darling Cellars ( 33°27'3.95"S 18°31'52.34"E)??

At Morningstar now. Louis is having his hangars rented out from underneath him. I am also abit rusty on radio procedure but saterday is usually unmanned and I am sure they will be expecting the sudden influx of deck chairs with umbrellas attachedV wrote:Where are you hangering at the moment? Re: Saldanha Breakfast Fly-In
Great stuff! Am looking forward to a pleasant flight. Forecast is 3-4kts SE, some clouds and a cold 14-15 C throughout the morning.
Koevoet can't join, unfortunately, he's been sucked into the World Cup preps already.
So, to summarise the plan:
1. 0800 take off from the home airfields, route to Darling Cellars (33°27'3.95"S 18°31'52.34"E)
2. 0840 (+/-) take off from Darling Cellars route to FASD
- flying in gaggle, one pilot (I presume Wargames) will make radio calls, indicate frequency changes, etc. rest to listen (pay attention and learn
- overhead or near Saldanha (at a point to be discussed) the gaggle dissolves everyone makes his own calls, join overhead and follow the standard left-hand circuit pattern at FASD (or is there going to be ground control at FASD for the event?)
3. 1000 (+/-) land at FASD
4. 1100 (+/-) take off from FASD route to home airfields
5. 1230 (+/-) arrival at home airfields
In case of problems, delays, not being able to make it, etc. the contact man is Wargames.
Does this sound right?
Participants so far:
- Barryathome - ZU-???
- Biggles - ZU-DNP
- Grumpy - ZU-???
- Mikemat - ZU-EXP (gyro)
- V - ZS-WHM
- Wargames - ZU-AVL
Are you taking extra fuel or are you planning to refuel at FASD? (The foam backrest would be a lot more comfortable than the jerry can
Cheers,
V.

No ground control. Unmanned airfield procedures.
Avgas available, if unleaded is required then we can send a bakkie with jerry cans to town.
