Hi Karl,

Do you think we will need to do any modifications on the engeine, excluding the rewind starter of course?

Hi Guys,

This is a great idea! What gear ratio would you need to use?

25mm and 125mm diameter sprockets approximately. It obviously depends on the belt you will use.

You need to make an extension to the crank, that needs to be hardened. Take the pull starter off and have a look at attachment points. I think there are some holes for bolts there that you can attach to.

Any of the timing belt supplier's should be able to guide you to an engineering company to make the sprockets. I would suggest you get the mounting plate made first, so you can take it with to get the correct size belt.

Also I suggest you buy the sprag bearing (bearing Man) and the starter motor, (a Nissan 1400 bakkie starter motor was about R500 at a Midas, brand new when I last checked) and take it with, so they can make the sprockets to fit these items.

Make sure you know the direction of turn before installing the sprag bearing. The inner surface (part that fits on the crank) needs to run free when the engine is running (I think it is clockwise when looking at the engine from the back.

I have spoken to Ranger and he is prepared to put together a solution. He will cut the plates, we will source a belting and sprocket supplier and the starter motors.

Fortunately he has a 503 at his factory so he can measure up the various components.

We will revert with a price asap

Morph, if you and Ranger are interested I have this thing sorted. Can supply you specs. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye. The pulley's are not standard off the shelf. They have to be made up specifically. After teeth are cut on a dividing head you have to roll on the sides or the belt can jump off. The crank extension should be made of a quality steel and heat treated. Should have a grease nipple in order to lubricate bearing from time to time. I noticed the picture on this topic there was no grease nipple. The bearing will eventually seize. I made mine about 3 years ago and if I recall the bearing itself was about R275.00 I stand to correction, but it was in that vicinity. Starter motor needs to be modified and an adaptor plate made to suit fitments.I know exactly where these guys are at and what they want. It's hard trying to work it all out by yourself. I know as I had no real help with it either. But I may add this it's still going to cost especially if there are different people making all the parts. Anyway I will be prepared to share my design with you and Ranger for your production purposes.

Here is an off the shelf product that is available in the USA(courtesy Skidmark) . The motor mounts 90deg to the crank, so it doesn't take up too much space at the front.

$560 x about 11 to cover Rand/$, shipping and VAT once it get's here.
