Hang on there now guys. It is not 12 months yet! (the first entry in my log-book is 21 May 2005)

For your information, the beer truck may not be enough for everyone that is waiting for me to go solo. I will give 7 days notice for the solo party of note which will happen in the Upper Highway area of KZN. Don't say that I haven't given you enough notice (especially those in Gangsters Paradise).

By the way, I had a great session this morning and if it hadn't have been for some "sink", caused by a cross-wind, on taking off I would have gone solo. Tomorrow I have a 5:30am session in an attempt to get some better wx.

Thanks for the support!

Sorry Wart, you got it wrong. ($$) ($$) ($$)

I bought the beers in Jan 2006 with great expectations and high hopes – they must be “sunk” by Jan 2007 otherwise I will have to buy a fresh lot waiting for the day ... :?: :?:

Is Wart Solo?

Postby John Young » Wed Jan 18, 2006 8:24 am

Just landed JIA - little echo's telling me that "The Wart" has something to say.

Well? Speak! Come, reveal all. All might be forgiven.

Bring on the beers!!!!

Yep, it happened this morning. I went solo.

Got to Cato at 5:20am, made coffee, did the pre-flight and filled her up (ZU-DAP). Took off on 17, after chasing the cattle sleeping there. A little bit of low patchy mist which presented me with my first "morning glory". The signs were all there. 4 Circuits with Wayne (my esteemed instructor) and then he asked me to stop. Gave me a briefing on what to expect, how to react and to taxi to holding point of 17 and wait for his radio check. I was actually a lot calmer than I thought I would be.

Radio check came; back-tracked 17, lined up 17 and off I went. So much lighter (sorry Wayne, I am sure this has nothing to do with our combined weight :( ) and climb was so much quicker. After clearing the thresh-hold of 35, I backed off on the power a bit and continued a nice climb and left turn. Turned down-wind 17, radioed and couldn't believe that it was happening. Turned base, turned finals and it all came together (almost!). Good directional control, good approach, round-out and fly her level; off on the power and then the flare. A bit of a "kangaroo" but all under control and stop next to Wayne. Congratulations and hand-shake, then back-track 17 for another solo circuit.

Enjoyed the second one so much that I almost for got to call on the down-wind leg (oops!). Second solo landing and had to call it a day as the cloud was threatening to close in. Picked up Wayne and taxied back to the hangars.

I must thank Wayne for his superb instruction. This was an awesome experience that I will never forget. Now to consolidate and continue with the training so that I can get my licence. I am looking forward to many, many happy and safe flying hours.

Thanks to all on the forum for sticking with me.
