Kalahari Bash

Postby LarryMcG » Thu Feb 11, 2010 8:18 am

A group of trikes and three axis 15 - 20 at the moment - will be flying from Eastern Cape - PE, EL, and Grahamstown, to Molopo lodge in the Kalahari, in Early July. Sounds like some might trailer there.

Proposed dates are to Meet at Molopo on Friday 2 July.

Return trip for some - others will route direct again - will be Westwards to Alex bay, and home down the WestCoast - as some of us have never flown the WestCoast

Check Molopo details here - http://www.molopo.co.za/

All fuel meals etc can be arranged at the lodge. Chalets or camping.

Hi George

Due to the number of a/c, the routes will differ - also from trikes to fixed wing. Ght guys will probably go - Graaf Reinet, De-aar, Prieska, Upinton, Koopan. EL guys maybe via aliwal north, and Pe will meet us in Graaf Reinet. Trike time at 50 mph should be about 11.5 hours, so we are planning on two days. Still looking for fuel stops, accom etc enroute, but havent finalized details yet.

Cradock and Aliwal North have also shown an interest, and now Kathu as well. Numbers are growing.

Some guys will trailer, and we should have some groundcrew, so should be fairly easy.

Molopo lodge host a bike festival every year - I heard with about 2000 people, so this could be a large event, and possibly be done yearly.

A-A-S, keep an eye here for any changes, and keep me posted with numbers etc.

Cheers

How far down the Westcoast are you talking about. We can definitely put you guys up for a braai, place to sleep etc at Morning Star. We have enough space in the clubhouse, toilets, cooking facilities, bar etc. The only challenge would be hangerage, but nothing that a lot of rope can't solve

Yes,

If there are restrictions, then Wintervogel is an option. Falls outside of the no fly zone

Is the no fly zone not 50 mile radius? If so then I don't think we fall outside. Gotta check.
But yes, we'd love to entertain the guys!!

Wintervogel chaps are also planning a trip far up the west coast, then on to Augrabies and returning inland via Loeriesfontein during June July. I would really appreciate any feedback regarding airstrips, accomodation, panoramic routes and places on route, no go zones and things to watch out for in the following areas.

1) West coast from Vredendal to Port Nolloth

2) Richtersveld area

3) Routing along the Orange river from Vioolsdrift to Augrabies

4) and/or Routing from Port Nolloth via Pofadder to Augrabies

5) North of Augrabies to Molopo and the salt pans like Hakskeen, Klein Aar, Groot Aar etc

6) Augrabies to Loeriesfontein / Calvinia - Boet's side of the forest

I have taken note of the above planned event and we may decide to fall in with the same dates.
