Re: Bifoculs and flying ?
I too had the problem of not being able to see my instruments as a result of being far sighted. I had done the bi focal thing which did not work for me at all. There was always a problem with the specs and the helmet causing a blind spot somewhere added to this it was bloody uncomfortable. I discussed this with my eye surgeon who advised me to wear only one contact lens in any one of my eyes, he assured me that this would be the solution to my problem. I questioned the possibility of not being able to see very well in certain situations and conditions. He took pains to explain how the brain will compensate for the two focal points and that after a few weeks I would not even notice the difference.
Now after three years of wearing only one contact lens I am totally satisfied that I took the step to go this route. I wear my reading lens in my right eye. the brain compensation has worked two hundred percent. I have passed two medical examinations like this and the Doctor thinks that it's a fantastic idea. I wear the lens every day and I do not require any specs other that the pair that I keep in my a/c should something happen vis a vie the lens getting lost. I do a fair amount of computer work an I do not require any specs at all. until I took this step I had to work with specs all day as I cannot see nearer than a meter. Subsequently one of my colleagues has gone the same route and is totally pleased with the results.

I have been wearing Vari-Focals for around 20 years, and also found that the lenses must be large, untill I got a new pair about 3 months ago. These lenses have an unbelieveable focus area, nothing seems to be out of focus, even with smaller lenses and you dont seem to need to adjust your head to focus. They are made in Germany and is somewhat pricey, but definately worth it.

Re: Bifoculs and flying ?
I have the same as Morph, but took it a little further.
I took a string from the bridge of the specs to the centre of the dash and measured for length.
The optomatrist then did the eye test at that distance and had bifocals made...they are perfect and are not too high so they do not effect vision in the Maule or Bushbaby on landing.
What I then had done was to have the top half dipped and tinted the colour I wanted..the result, limited sunglasses with Bifocals.
I have used them for 18 months and in rain or mist they remove the glare and you can see through and much further and clearer than without.
