Leaded or Lead replacement fuel - VW motor

Postby pietmeyer » Tue Jan 19, 2010 8:37 am

For those of you with VW motors in the air, I am using lead replacement fuel with valve-ease added to the fuel. What would the implications be of using unleaded fuel if lead replacement (LRP) is not available?

Any advice of fuel or any warning I should know about with a VW 2.1 fuel injection motor?

Thanks

Nothing will happen, use 95 unleaded without any additives.

Unleaded fuel burns faster and at a slightly higher temperature than leaded fuel. The Lead in leaded fuel basically also formed a deposit on the valve seat that 'cushioned' the seat to a degree. This means that engines designed to run on leaded really only has one main difference and that is an exhaust valve seat made of a tougher grade of steel than the engine made for leaded. So if you want to run unleaded you basically have to simply make sure the valve seat in the cylinder heat is of the correct grade steel and that is it. If it's still the originals as per factory I think it will be a bad idea to run unleaded.
If the engine was one of the last injection 2.1s out of the factory as per combi I think you will be fine. If it's heads from a bettle I won't.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.
