CPT to FANC(NewCastle) trip (and back)

Postby Gadget » Thu Jan 07, 2010 1:30 pm

Hello all you beuatiful, beuautiful, beutiful....... ag crap!!!!

Hello julle oulike mense.

May you all have a very prosperous year and may you find a fuel sponsor for all your flying.

I am planning a trip in the bosbefokker from Morning Star to New Castle.

For those illitares(anybody not living in the western cape, ilLITERate=1 liter brandy, 2 liter coke, 3 liter ford) and those who dont visit to often, Morning star is in Cape Town and New Castle is where Bennie lives. My planned route is via Vicoria West and New Tembe, Tempe, Tempi. What ever they call that nice airfield next to bloemfontein, the one on the left hand side.

I opened the discussion to ask for tips and tricks and routing information for good pubs in the area.

The basic idea is to do the trip on or roundabout the 4th of March with the softness. I planned it like this due to the perceived idea that weather systems are most stable then and there are three hops 4HR, 3HR and 3HR. Approximately 10 hours, 800 miles.

Any tips would be welcome on all aspects, weather, radio, contacts, hangerage(see last point), stretch exercises in the cockpit while flying, how to do that upside down thing the birds do when crossing the free state as well as where to stay after sixth beer. I would also like some clarification on the offer from SAA to hitch your aeri to one of their birds for half price.

Thanks everyone, and happy new year.

If there is grass between your toes , you're flying to low.....
If ever in doubt about flying - drink a beer.
That will give you at least 8 hours to think about it some more.

Nooit! Those okes get caught! It is much safer up there, no speedcops and if the softness as much as coos about anything you let her test her wings.

I did a trip (almost) to Vryheid (about 150 km upstream from Newcastle) in a Bushbaby and if you have any questions I can share some of my flight planning info with you. Call me at 08three232threeeight53 if you have any questions.

I planned for 29 April take off FAFK-Carnavon-De Aar-Colesburg-New Tempe (Sleep over) then -Harrismith-Ladysmith-Vryheid. Was great fun untill I got to New Tempe. It rained and stormed non stop for 4 days. Luckily I organised a hanger. Ended up driving the rest of the trip by road spent one night in Vryheid drove back and flew back to FAFK the next day.

Of the 8 days I had available for the trip only 2 were flyable.

Great fun. Make sure have enough time to wait out weather.

Regards
Andre

Thanks Andre.

I was planning on taking two weeks leave just in case the weather turns bad. Thanks for the tip on hangerage, I dont think Victoria West has hangerage so beaufort west might be a better option.

Mr Gadget !!!

I have done the trip from Morningstar to Fisante kraal to Bouford West to Tempe and then straight to Newcastle. What Plane will you be flying and what type of fuel will you need. Hanger space, fuel and transport should not be a problem in Newcastle. Boufort have excelent Lodging and Resturant faciletys. Avgas Yes . Mogas ?

Tempe have a nice lodge just 3km from the airport. Avgas Yes, nice Resturant Good apron parking. Hope it helps.

Hi Bennie.

Long time no hear. Now I will eventually meet you. I am planning to do the trip in morphs and my bushbaby, running on mogas. What would hangerage cost for about a week in New Castle? I would like to see if I can get hangerage on New Tempe and Beaufort West as well, just in case the weather turns nasty.

How many hours did you do on your trip and what was the prevailing winds like? What time of the year did you fly? There is a million more questions to come.

Bakgat Groetnis.

Hi.

So the trip never happened. I will be visiting there on the weekend and wondered who I can contact to come see the airfield. I am planning a flight from cape town to New Castle sometime but would first like to familiarize myself with the field and approach procedures. Can you help?
