Need some help with my front fork..

Postby Smiley » Mon Sep 14, 2009 8:39 am

I'm currently stripping the nose section on my Mainair Gemini and need to replace the front portion of the piping where the wheel fork fits through. I see the manufacturers "I think" first added glue or something on the "male pipe" before inserting into the female pipe and fixing it with two bolts.

I've now taken out the two bolts but battle to release the inner pipe from the outer due to this glue..

What can I use/do to breakdown this glue that's not releasing the inner pipe...? :? :?

Maybe you can post a photo to explain what you mean?

Howzit Ystervark

I'll do if I don't come right, thanks.

It's just two pipes that fits over each other and are fastened with two bolts. However they've used glue to help bond these two pipes together even more.

I now need to take these two pipes apart but the glue is not releasing the inner pipe from the outer pipe...

Hopw this help...?

Yip they use a very strong glue/Epoxy

Only way is to heat the pipes and then once the glue spacer whatever starts to melt then it will release.

Any ideas on what I can use to heat the piping?

Why don't you just buy a QuickR?
Seriously though: A blow torch might work to heat the pipes. Only issue is, will it cause damage/warping to the metal?

I would rather not use an open flame as this can cause the material properties to change i.e. "almost annealing it"

It should be the type of heat you get from a hairdryer, heat that will melt the glue, however it does not have the temp to effect the material's structural properties.

Induction heating is an option but not sure where I can find somebody who has that toy..

A good quality heat gun should eventually get it hot enough to soften the epoxy

Thanks, yip I agree. I'll first try the "hobby heatgun" they use to shrink Solarfilm  , if this doesn't work I'll get the bigger type..

Hi

A standard over the counter hardware store type heat gun will work.
The small ones for the model aircraft do not give enough heat.
Flo and myself took a long time pulling pipes apart, ##
But heat is the way to go.

Thanks, I'll organize one of those then! (^^)
