Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Hi Boet,
Just as a matter of interest - did you ever consider the VW Golf engine? From what little info I can find on the web, it seems to weigh in at around the same as a type 4 VW (230lbs), and is good for 120hp. Costs nothing to maintain and overhaul, and I have seen guys beat the cr@p out of them and they keep on ticking!
Is there any reason I have never seen anyone do an aircraft conversion on one of these?

I used to own a VP2 with a Jetta engine (1800 fuel injected), it had a belt reduction using the standard single ignition.justin.schoeman wrote:Hi Boet,

It had around 450 hours on it when I sold the plane.

Yes, that's the baby! The guy who bought if from me has now done a complete rebuild on the plane, I hope it will fly again soon, still with the Jetta engine!
Kind Regards,
Rudi

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Those engines are inderstructable but I always thought they would be too heavy?.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.
Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Jan used what was available at the time. IE: His wife`s Volla`s engine.
There is newer lighter tecnology available. The Toyota engines all have aluminium blocks, and that makes them more suitable for aircraft use. I have not touched the Yaris engine now for more than 2 weeks. As I only scratch around with it on weekends. During the week I have too much that keeps me busy. Next 2 weekends are also spoken for. But in the meantime I am getting some spares together.

And heavy they are, you must see the weight installed in the tail to get the CofG rightStephan van Tonder wrote:Those engines are inderstructable but I always thought they would be too heavy?.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
I haven't actually gone to scrap yards to look around, but apparently some of the 1600 Golf engines (Rabbit in the US) were made with aluminium blocks. Not sure if they were sold in SA though...
Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
The new generation 4-cyl 1300cc Corolla engine that came out beginning of this year is another fantastic candidate. Weight wise it is on par with the 3-cyl Yaris engine, BUT it produces around 103hp. that is WITH the catalitical converter and what all. By removing the converter you already score about 12-15 hp. Have searched the whole country, so far none available. Found only one, but that had a head on collision, so the motor was thrashed.
To the best of my knowledge the VW Golf engines all have cast-iron engine blocks, SPELL: HEAVY.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
What might also be interesting are the new 4 cylinder, 1.4 TSI engines from Volkswagen with 122 or 160 hp and direct fuel injection.
However, it might be quite expensive to get them for a reasonable price, including the ECU, as they are quite new so that you will get them only new as a "spare part".
Cheers,
Oliver

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
From what I see this Yaris engine would be a nice replacement in my Koala
For the bigger applications I have also been looking into alternative engines for aviation, and being a Hyundai fan maybe the following motors may also be looked at eventualy.
1. Lambda - 3.3/3.8 L
The Hyundai Lambda engine family is the company's modern all-aluminum V6. It is manufactured at Hyundai's HMMA plant in Montgomery, Alabama.
The 3.3 L G6DB version was introduced with the 2006 Sonata. It produces 237-247 PS (173 kW) at 6000 rpm and 238 ft•lbf (304 N•m) at 3500 rpm.
The G6DB has an aluminum block and heads, variable valve timing on the intake side, and 4 valves per cylinder. Bore is 92.0 mm (3.6 in) and stroke is
83.8mm (3.3 in) for a total displacement of 3342 cc.
2. Mu - 2.7 L
This is a variant of the 2.7 Liter Delta V6 (G6BA).
It's Engine Code (from the dealer sticker) is G6A5.
It is rated 185 hp @ 6,000 RPM, and 182 lb.-ft. @ 4,000 rpm.
It is a 60-degree 6-cylinder, with aluminum block and aluminum heads.
It still features DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, and Multi-Port Fuel Injection.
Now it features CVVT and VLM Variable length intake runners.
3. The Hyundai Theta (G4KC) is a gasoline 4-cylinder automobile engine family.
The third all-aluminum engine of Hyundai Motor Company debuted in the fifth-generation Hyundai Sonata sedan, which was unveiled in August 2004
in S. Korea.
It features hollow stainless-steel DOHC with powder-metal cam lobes, pent-roof combustion chamber and shimless bucket tappets in the cylinder head.
BorgWarner Morse TEC supplies the complete set of timing system that uses the company's proprietary silent timing chains. CVVT(Continuously-variable
valve timing) works on the intake side.
The aluminum alloy engine block, which is formed using high-pressure die-cast method, has a unique Metaldyne-supplied cassette-type balance shaft
module with a two-stage oil pump built-in. In the lower-end, the block is reinforced by a ladder frame. Other notable features include fracture-split sinter-
forged connecting rods and stainless-steel exhaust manifold.
Theta's EMS(engine management system) software is EMS-II from Siemens VDO and the 32-bit PCM(Powertrain Control Module) calculates the amount of
intake air by utilizing a contamination-proof hot-film type MAF(mass air flow) sensor.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Project has been put on ice for a while because of work pressures and financial constraints.
I have identified the guys who will be making the "gears" for the toothbelt prop reduction system. I have found a way to make even this part of the mod very affordable. So even when I am not working on the engine, I am constantly on an information gathering mission. Rest assured, once I have my teeth sank into something, I refuse to let go, so this engine WILL fly. Sooner or later.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Been to the Fairest on Friday. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Ranger for the exhaust manifold flange that he cut for me. "No and please, that is my contribution towards the Project." AND the guys at Cowley Exhausts for the 3 into one collector an the beeaudifully perfectly bent "branch pipes". All for a very nice affordable price. It seems everyone is hungry to see this engine work. Hopefully this week will see the engine mount welded, then we can hang the engine. I urge everyone with whatever expertise available to this project, to PLEASE come forward and help. We WILL make flying affordable again.
