CURRENTLY !!!!
Hey guys, mabey somebody can shed some light on the following,
A couple of us were flying around the patch on Saturday morning. A lot of guys in the doing radio calls " currently overhead abc blah blah". Somebody came on the air and said that "currently" was not to be used!!!.
I have never heard of such crap. Anybody have any feedback on the above?
I did not catch the Reg of the aircraft but this guy was getting very hot under the collar about this.
Thanks guys.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
When transmitting, you are actually telling people where you are. The word "currently" can therefor (maybe) be seen as a duplication.
"AZP overhead Garankuwa" versus "AZP currently overhead Garankuwa". Means the same. Personally I would not bother to have an issue with it, but the perfectionists will always be hunting.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
I went onto Avcom to see all the hoo haa about this and i must say this... everyone is in the air to have fun. We all fly because we enjoy it and the air belongs to everyone. I still cannot understand that some pilots measure "their" radio skills to the size they think their "john"is??? I mean seriously, there are a million different ways to make a radio call and yes some more experienced pilot may sound better and be alittle more specific but I tell you this, If a low time pilot or student gets in the air with his dad or girl friend or who ever and goes for a flip and then gets kaked out by some dude who thinks he is hung like a donkey because he sounds more professional he will not make any radio calls to avoid the embarresment. Now don't you think this makes it more dangerous?? I would much rather a pilot make a real shitty call than make no call. People can nit pick all day over everyones calls but really, so what?? so what if a pilot says currently, or "at this time" or what ever. at least he is flying, paying taxes, bying an arie which is keeping the market up and going, going to air shows keeping interest paying for atc by paying certain fees.. etc
I have a strong feeling about this for many reasons. I am an instructor in MPL and Commercial and I was also a student once who got kaked out before and it is not necesary. So to the guy who thinks he is the shit, Plz sir, deflate the size of your pecker and remember that the guy who said currently at least shares your interest in avaiation. South africans have alot more crap to worry about than who says what on the radio!!
This is my 10 cents worth.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
On a nice Saturday the radio transmissions can be crowding the airwaves. So keep it relevant in as few words as possible.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
Way to go Africa
I have been in aviation for years, and a radio license examiner at a point as well, and I must say that I would rather have a poor radio call from someone, than no comms at all.
Having said that I would urge everyone to keep it relevent and rather chat on 123.45 etc.
To guys getting hot under the collar about 'currently; etc. grow up! you are probably the same type of person who ums and ah's your way through a whole radio transmission, and has to make a number of calls in order to get all the relevent facts across. Radio discipline does not mean doing a radio call that is phonetically correct, perfect grammar or even correct pronunciation - it means making a radio transmission that is as short, clear and concise as possible in order to get the message across and should you have a need to say 'currently' or anything else then go for it! Get the message across!
Tune your radio into a busy frequency at times and just listen in. Even Boeing/Airbus drivers use incorrect wording and phraseology at times, they sometimes even say 'hello', and heaven forbid; Thank you!, and possibly the most sacreligeous thing 'good controlling guys, thank you.' I am sure that by this stage our dear peckerwood would have had a coronary and would be blocking the radio waves with his mayday call!!! This is how it goes when it is not so busy, however, when it gets busy the radio calls are short with no nice embellishments. Again; keep it relevent (info and the circumstances)
We are so worried about what the other guy is doing and forget about sorting our own s@%t out. Fly your own plane and get out of the other guys cockpit!

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
Just a thought....
The guy that started the whole thing buy moaning on the radio in the first place probably caused the worst radio infraction of the day by having an argument/fight on the air and in so doing used up his obviously valuable airtime.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
I say In my humble opinion that he can get F(**^&*^d - there is NOTHING wrong with the use of the word currently in a radio transmission, and this is from a guy who did his radio license recently. Keep it short, sweet, plan your transmission, say what you need to and get off the radio. ...

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
Hi all
a Lot cas be said about this topic, i fully agree with it all.Just had a look at the "OXFORD"dictionary and it says..."currently avd. at the present time;now" you don't get it any easier than this one word relpacing a whole sentence does this not boil down to reducing radio clutter. As for me i was taught using currently, currently i am using it and guess what ....in future i will still be using currently for position reporting.

Re: CURRENTLY !!!!
Thumbs up to Africa and Windswept
I have heard about so many pilots staying out of controlled airspace because they are too scared to make a mistake when talking to the atc or even worse "sneaking" through controlled airspace and not saying anything.
So please guys, rather say "currently" than not saying anything at all.
Oh, and listen to ORTIA approach and you will hear that "new" pilots are not the only ones making mistakes and atc's correcting them.
