HD PVR

My question: Does anyone have the HD PVR system? How does it work? Is it worth it?

I have had one since October last year… The HD picture will blow your mind if the program is really HD, the nature programs and things like CSI are excellent.

My only complaints are:

The system is not stable and there seem to be a few bugs in the software that despite numerous software updates have not yet been resolved, it freezes, misses recordings, sometimes needs to be re-booted. Mine has been in for repairs three times, once it was completely dead, then it cam back and didn’t record and then did not find the satellite.

It also does not have the video on demand feature that the normal duel view PVR has.

All in all it is not hassle free TV, but fun to watch when it works!

The software on the receivers is poor to say the least - I think the old standard PVRs and decoders have better software.

I will wait a while - and once more programming available will buy a HD PVR to receive the signal and build my own PC based HD PVR around it.

I already have a PC based PVR for standard definition which I can access from the internet to set up recordings, even stream the content of recordings to my and PCS on my home network (or if cost allowed stream to internet), and best of all - once show is recorded the software goes through the show and removes all the adverts so I dont even have to use the FFWD button on the remote.

It is some freeware called GBPVR. (and no GB does not stand for the UK )

Hardware requirements are not huge - I have a 4 or 5 year old P4 1.6 ghz machine with 1gb of RAM. Only bit you need to be picky about is the TV capture card. Must have MPEG2 built in to the hardware of the card - software level is not sufficient. Would recomend the Hauppage cards either the PVR250 or PVR 650 - expect to pay anywhere from R600-1000 for one of these.

It is all about choice. Drive or Fly. We all know that driving is far more complicated
