Found this good article on Dead Stop landing by Greg Gremminger who explains it far better than me...

Looks like we may be deviating off topic and into autorotation landings instead... Glenn please split thread if you deem necessary.

Learjet,
Thanks a stack, that explains a lot!!
I think they should not split this thread as we all know the differences between a helicopter and a gyro. I think the main difference is actually in the way they autorotate!
Which brings me back to my statement that you have to be a lot more accurate with your flare in a gyro than a chopper! But I think a gyro autorotates much better than any chopper. These are just my opinions, I have no gyro experience.

Whirly, I think we must get you in a gyro somewhere. Nothing like first hand experience, even in an open cocpit.whirly wrote:These are just my opinions, I have no gyro experience.

Maybe you will like it more than you want to,

Forgive my silence guys, I have been in Europe and returned today.Low Level wrote:Jetranger has vast experience in both. Funny, with the crappy weather in Cape Town, one would think that he would spend more time on the forum.whirly wrote:Is there anybody on here that flies both??![]()
I could go on for ages about gyro's vs heli's but the topic has been very well covered. All I would like to add is this:- In all helicopters, upon engine failure, you have about 1.5 seconds to dump the collective in order to enter auto-rotation. Failure to do this will bleed off rotor RPM to the point that it is unrecoverable and you will probably die. At the same time you have to maintain or build airspeed. Not necessary in a Gyro because it is constantly in auto-rotation so provided you maintain airspeed its a non-event.
I am on record claiming that, due to the aerodynamics of Gyro's, they are safer than Heli's and I have not met anyone yet that is able to convince me otherwise.
Fly Safe!

PS... these pics may hint at one of the reasons I went overseas... shh

No, I didn't order ... sadly.
BUT, I did meet a gentleman that has one in the UK and he has agreed that I have right of first refusal on his should he ever decide to let it go.
In the meantime I'll fly my trusty old sycmore and M16's and dream...
