There are two other options as well ;
Simonini (Italian) similar to the Rotax 582. Andy Kaspersen used to bring them in , not sure if he still does.
Verner 133Mk (Czech) similar to the BMW with 1000 hr TBO. Look at http://www.vernermotor.com.
Already run in from the factory , you just fit it & fly. Looks really nice - 4 stroke.

Hola Senor Mexicano

I have a Verner fitted to my Safari. Good engine option if you can get it for the right price. If you are in Mexico, contact Arthur Thompson (http://www.flydiver.com), he is the agent in Washington state in the USA, and should be able to assist in Mexico as well. I have the only one fitted to a trike in SA.

I removed the 582, made a few mods to the engine mount and bolted the Verner on, wired it up and did the plumbing. Nothing to it. The paperwork excercise at the SACAA was another story, what a nightmare.

I also looked at BMW engines, but the electronics is tricky if you try and adapt the harness from the bike (especially the latest 1200 models) and I scrapped that idea. However, there are options for the engine control module and reduction drive available of the shelf. It is a very robust engine, and I would look into that very carefully for my next project. If you get a good one from a scrapped bike, it should also be very well priced compared to other engine options.

Regards
Barry

As a matter of interest, how many hours do you have on the engine? Experienced any problems? What are the parts/spares prices like?

Thanks!

Nice trike Barry , how is the performance with the new wing ?
You have my attention with the engine as well , I was not aware there were any in S.A.
I still think Rotax need a bit of competition on pricing.

I see the US price delivered in US is $11500, what did you pay if you don't mind me asking and where did you get it from? also what was the deal on shipping it to SA? It looks a very nice engine, I'm keen to know more especially since you have done all the hard work at CAA, thanks very much.

Justin, Kingfisher and Gaz

To answer your questions:

I fitted the engine in mid 2007, and have since then done just short of 50 hours on it. No problems with it to date. I have not needed to buy any spares or parts for it, apart from a few pieces of exhaust pipe (flanges, bends and straight sections in order to fit the exhaust system) as well as main jets. Those I bought from the dealer in the USA, and it was not much. [The factory in Czech would have helped me as well, but they did not have facilities for Credit Card transactions, and the charge for wiring the money would have been more then the parts.]

The only other parts I have used on it are oil, sparkplugs and oil filters; it uses the same filter as a Renault 2.0 Scenic, so I simply buy the proper Fram or GUD from my local Spares shop. The oil and plugs I buy from my local Bike shop.

The wear components: pistons, rings, bearings and even the conrods used in this engine are Mercedes Benz parts, so when the time comes to rebuild it (1000 hrs) it should be simple and relatively inexpensive.

I did not import this one, I bought it from the previous SA dealer who, at the time did not want to import and support these engines any more, and gladly relieved him of his burden for R50k. The factory sent me an e-mail in December last year, and offered me a new engine for 6800 Euros. A friend recently enquired from the new agent in SA, and the going price now is R125k. I consider that too much, and would not buy it for that money, get a BMW rather. If you get a good one from a wrecked bike for say R20 to 25 k, you should be able to fit the ECU and Reduction drive for another R35 to 40k, and then you have a 95 to 105 hp motor (depending on model) that will really kick ass without breaking the bank.

The wing on the trike is a Stratos 15 Topless built by Jenya at Petit. It is great, although not as fast as I would have liked. Hands off it flies at 55 mph. I may still fit an electric trimmer to it to get a bit more speed out of it. [My hanger mate flies 3 axis, I need to keep up.]

The very best feature of this is engine is the fuel burn. It uses 6.5 to 7 liters per hour. Where I used to take 20 liters of fuel to the hanger every time I went flying my 582, I now run the risk of the fuel getting stale in the tank. At climb out I hardly ever exceed 4200 rpm, and straight and level it cruises at 3700 to 3800 rpm.

Regards
Barry

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the price posted last year (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=280&p=108744&hilit=verner#p1712) R80k (incl). At that price it seems quite a deal. At R125k, maybe not (especially with a Jab 2200 going for less than R100k).

S.A. agent for the Verner motor is Helmut Hahn in Brits , 083 555 7802.
The Verner engine turns the prop the same direction as the 912 and the box ratio is
very close to the 912's.
He also have radial engines and water cooled engines.
