Avcom headsets - Help / advice needed

Postby Dish » Wed May 06, 2009 1:37 pm

Howdy lads,

My softness gave me a two Beautiful Avcom 454 PNR headsets with the PTT on the side of the earphone. Beautiful headsets. So off I race to the Bantam Plug em in and ..... it sounds like they only start picking up after the second or third word of a sentence, sounds a bit weird.... Chatted with Basie and plugged them into his trike with the squelch set on HIGHEST, and they seemed a lot better

I think theyre Voice activated?>?? is that true?? I chatted to a few mates who advised that chaging the squelch on my (filser) Radio in the Bantam will get them to work properly.. but some say turn it up others turn it down... Is this the general consensus, or does anyone have any other ideas... They work well, just after the second or third word.../???

Then - They have a PTT on the side of the right Earphone, which is awesome as it means the pax/navigator/instructor can talk without needing to take control or touch the stick. BUUT there is something in the instructions that says the radio needs an auxillary setting which i dont believe mine has ( I have no external intercom) -- wat NOU???

Please advise - many thanks

WEEEEEEeeeeeddddyyyyyyyy you ole goat - where you been??? Not blaming anyone, im just wondering whether i need to install an intercom as well... the headsets are awesome. While on the subject however, if my radio doesnt have an aux setting then what are the chances of installing an ipod... pretty much zero i would assume :? :? :? . so perhaps and intercom isnt a bad idea anyway , -- any intelligent replies welcome....

Hi Dish,

This does sound a bit strange, I cannot recall that any of the (+/- 150) 454's I sold to the general flying public had this problem. They are supposed to work immediately when you talk. This does sound like a squelch issue. Might not be a bad idea to take the whole caboodle to an avionics shop / place where they were bought to have them checked out.

As far as intercoms go, I can recommend the Pilot communictions PA200. Small, reliable two place intercom. They sell for about R1200. The pilot intercom and the AC454's work like a charm.

Hello Dish

I have an intelligent solution for you.

Start every communication with the words "Doos in Flight" This being ZU-DIF
That way your comms should have kicked in by then and we will all hear you.
Parasitic Drag: A pilot who bums a ride and complains about the service.

From what I can see the "PNR" headsets are Passive Noise Reduction, i.e. there is no active amplifier etc in the headset that needs to be set.

The problem is typical of intercom sets that have a noise gate. The noise gate requires a certain level of mic input before it opens. Normally this is set by adjusting the squeltch on the intercom, not the radio. You turn it until the gate remains open all the time during flight due to ambient noise then back it off a little until it closes. But in your case your intercom is integrated into the radio and when you adjust the squeltch are you adjusting the radio broadcast squeltch or the intercom :?:

An alterntive is to see whether the mic's themselves have a gain setting, Maybe they are too soft and need to be turned up a , just the mikes, not the whole headset volume.

I lied through my false teeth

http://www.avcomm.com/aviation_ac454pnr.htm

It appears that it does have an active mic, with noise cancelling
An M65 microphone with ceramic hybrid active filtering chip amplifies desired voice signals while eliminating up to 75% of the background noise so that you can be heard more clearly in even the noisiest of environments like open cockpits. Additionally, the preamp circuit is immune to environmental changes, will not corrode, and has a much longer life than conventional PCB based products.
So the silicon coated synchopater flabulator needs adjusting   8)
