VW engine specialist

can you guys recommend a VW engine specialist in an around rand airport. I am having some pre ignition problems after shutting down engine. it is a vw 2.1 with carb. all was okay before we had the valve clearances set which were by the way closed tight and so engine had low compression. once valve clearances were set properly , engine had much more power but now we have a pre ignition problem after shutting engine down. the engine keeps on firing for about 5 seconds after i shut down the ignition.

Most probable cause is ignition timing too much advanced.

I think he got out of the engine building game, but he was still willing to offer advice last time I spoke to him.

I think you are probably short a few head gaskets, or have thinner head gaskets after the service.

Run-on after you have killed the ignition is caused by fuel still being supplied and soemthing red hot glowing inside the motor. So there is either a hotspot or there is carbon deposits.
For the same reason most car carburettors has a cut-off for the idle fuel that also shuts off the fuel and not only the spark.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.

PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT I NO LONGER HAVE RUNNING ON PROBLEMS vhpy vhpy vhpy vhpy


Drained the tanks today containg the unleaded 95 and filled up with AVGAS. then ran engine for 5 min with 10 min breaks and then ran it again and again. each time i shut the ignition off, the engine stopped straight away. Is it possible that the avgas got rid of some carbon build up which was acting as a hot spot ?? what say the experts. also checked timing 25 degrees TDC and checked air fuel mixure on carb.

Also with regard to fuel , some say use 95 unleaded, other say LRP and other say avgas. seems like avgas is the way to go for me. more expensive but cleaner fuel. will have to change oil every 25 hours and check plugs every 25 hours aswell. again what do the experts say.

I phoned Barry Turner and he was very helpful

Unleaded is no good for the old VW engines. Valve seats were not of the right material and unleaded actually runs hotter so you will experience valve seat recession. Sadly - avgas is the only choice for those engines.

I run on unleaded but add "valve ease" no problems

Looking at the Aerovee specs that i assembeled 2 of the last 5 months. They recomend 7: 1 on mogas (95) and 8: 1 on avgas. I fitted 5,2mm spacers under the barrels to drop the comp. The recomended timing is 28 deg btdc with dist advance locked. Had the same problem with ZU-ASL that belongs to Brian in Bloem timing sorted his problem. (^^)
