Spraypainting Cheetah

Postby soeperboer » Wed Apr 08, 2009 7:52 am

Can anybody help me with info regarding the spraypainting of dacron on a Cheetah? I read an article in the new MISASA mag on Cheetah no1 wich had been painted , and is considering the same for mine instead of re-covering with trilam.

I am spraying my skyranger at this moment, what a big job.My skyranger was sprayed with something like a clear lakker and i had to sandpaper it to get rid of the shine on the sails and then gave it a verry light coat of 2k paint . If i can give you advice to stay as close to the couler that you have on now cause when you go for a diff couler you will have to give it more than one coat.I had a problem with the paint making marks on the sails they call them fish eyes ,and i had to sand the hole wing down again. I started of with a verry thin coat of the couller i used and then another coat and that was good . I took the wing and wayed it and after all is done i put it on the scail and it is not mutch heavier but i think with 3,4,5 coat it will get quiet heavy. O yes and do not forget to wash the sails with benzeen before spraying. It sticks to the sails like stront op n wol kombers bacause i had to sand it down and it was one hell of a job.But do not try to spray it if you do not have the stuff on that gives it a shine, but Boet can tell you more he is the fundi on this. But he can also tell you to go and sit back and relax untill the shit feeling has gone. Good luck.I am verry happy and my plain looks great. vhpy

I think if you cover the Cheetah wit "proper" aircraft dope and fabric, it will be a lot faster. It MUST suffer horrndoer skin friction drag..........Rather let me shut up.

This tread is about spraypainting a cheetah.......I have seen 001 and must say that it doesn't look as good as the normal route of fabric and dope but it looked reasonable. I think the biggest drawback of spraying the trylam or dacron is the fact that it is not crimped liked normal fabric over the fuse and that you will get much more flex(flutter) on the paint than with conventional covering and the paint will crack a lot quicker. Even if you add plastisizer it will not solve this issue. That being said I think it is a short term solution and might give you a year or two extra fabric life. I am not sure of the effect of the chemicals in the paint on the trylam or dacron. Maybe just find out from someone who knows.

I am talking under correction here but I do not think the cheetah can be covered the conventional way. There are a lot of bolts and nuts that might need changing during MPI's and am sure that if they will be permanently covered the conventional way.

Toemaar Boatch, my "spal tjekker" werk ook nie in afrikaans nie! Gelukkig is almal op die site baie intelligent en n goeie begrip het net n halwe woord nodig!

My logic says that it should be a No-No....

Putting certain solvents (which 2K is - Polyethylene etc) on synthetic type materials would modify or weaken the normal composition.

I'd make dead sure if you could or you surely be dead! (**)
