Flew with Johan Meyer and Ivan, departing Fisantekraal towards Mossel Bay, as they started their journey back towards Joburg. After saying good bye to them 30 minutes into the flight, headed back towards Stellenbosch, via Somerset West. Dared myself to overfly the mighty Stellenbosch mountains. I climbed up to an eye-watering 6 500ft. The flying conditions were perfect, like skating on ice. Once over Somerset West, one is pretty much a5 6500 ft AGL at that stage.

Am trying to get over this fear of heights thing!

For me it takes more guts to climb to 6500', with huge mountains below, than to climb to 41 000' in my Boeing 737. One feels very small and exposed up there in one's gyro. It a mixture of fun and sheer terror! Apparently the helicopter guys experience the same feeling. One of our 737 captains, who is a very experienced helicopter instructor as well, told me the other day he had to climb up to 9000ft in a R44 near Durban when trying to track a vehicle for one of the tracking companies. Once up there, he said he nearly &*^#$@# in his pants with the height!

Mak, am available Sat or Sun. Am not flying the big birds then.

Congratulations Glen! you have clearly conquered your fear of high flying over the mountains!
Well done. (^^)

(Did you use the 1,2,3,4,5... self hipnosis method?)

I didn't try that self hypnosis thing, but I do believe it can help your subconscious with things like that.

I was more or less ok, but if it was turbulent, I do think I would have tensed up a lot, and would not have enjoyed it at all.

Turbulence at altitudes below 2000 doesn't phase me at all, but not when so high!
