Car trailer needed - CT based if possible

I need to take a little VW Golf up to JHB next month when I go up there for my little Grandson's birth. Now we can either go in 2 cars, or if I can find a car trailer I'll tow it up. Anyone got a trailer for me, please oh ate 3 236 fifewun53

A-frame is a good idea. I have towed a Renault from the Eastern Transvaal to Pretoria with a Golf 1, no sweat. Make one. The expensive part is the hook. Take it off in Jo'burg and leave the rest behind. A car trailer is heavy and you have to tow it back again. Not a lekka thing to schlep around.

P.S. You can use the Golf as a Venter to load a lot of crap.

I used U-Trek in CT when I fetched the KR in Melkbosstrand. They have a depot in Roodepoordt so only drag it 1 way. Only problem is the trailer is moer heavy...

I agree with the A frame. I have towed my beach buggy from Jhb to Plett and back on 4 separate occations and never had a problem. If you get a farm type tow hitch you can make a home made hitch? Don't know how strong it will be, but I have used similar on farm, but never on road?

The Buggy also has a tow hook, so it has venter behind it. We measure around 15m.... Voyager, Buggy and Venter....

If you have a luggage problem take a trailer. If you need to get the VW Golf up to JHB tow it. I will help you make an A-frame in that case. Now down to some serious stuff. Are we going to the university after work? I'll get hold of Gadget, Tsotsie, Skidmark, Joe and Tsotsie to see if they will join us as well.

If it has a towbar - Go to Midas. buy 2 male "trailer" plugs and 4m 8 core 12v wire (Cat 5 Network cable also does the job, but technically it not the right thing for the job ). Plug 1 into tow car and other into Citi tow plug and bob's your auntie. if it does not have tow hitch and connector you will have to wire up the Citi's rear lights to the plug. Simple when you get down to it.... We did it with a beetle a while back when the tow light plug adapter ended up getting crushed by over zealous reversing.... . took less than 30mins with a little insulation tape and some patience. Just run the indicator cable under the car (with cable ties) else it can scratch the paint when it rubs on bodywork.

Greg, this is elemental stuff for a boff like you(One that frequents university) ....... But yes I agree, if you can get Ranger to do it, then why not!!

good thinking RV4Ker, yes the golf does indeed have a towbar, and I have a shitload of Cat 5 cable.

If you want to do that then remove the front bumper and bolt your a-frame to those mounting points on the inside of the chassis. I personally don't like that method as it makes a gearbox run in a way that it isn't meant to and I won't do it for the distance from the cape to Gauteng - just a couple of hundred or so is maybe OK. I'd rather look at renting a trailer one way or perhaps a piggyback that at least has the front wheels off the ground. BUT saying that I also have towed a drowned nissan hardbody back from moz for almost the same distance. Difference is the car was written off anyway and we removed the propshaft.
Just remember - if you want to take the driveshafts off - you have to bolt the end of a cv joint back into the hub as that is what keeps the bearing together on the golf. Must say it makes for a long drive either way. Have towed a race golf to the cape and back a couple of times.

True, but there is no real forces on the gears, and the lubrication is in tact, so won't really "hurt" the gearbox.
