Fire Proof Identification Plate

Can anyone please clarify for me where I can find specific details regarding the specification with respect to size for the Fire Proof Identification Plate that is required on all aircraft except hang-gliders, including powered hang-gliders; unmanned balloons; model aircraft; paragliders, including powered paragliders and paratrikes; and single-seat aircraft, unless used for “hire and fly”?

I have established from the CATS that:-

CATS 47.00.3 AIRCRAFT REGISTRATION AND MARKING

3. Identification plate
(1) Every South African registered aircraft must have affrixed to it an identification plate stamped or engraved with its nationality and registration marks.
(2) The identification plate must be –
(a) made of fireproof metal or other fireproof material of suitable physical properties; and
(b) affixed to the aircraft in a prominent position near the main point of entrance to the aircraft.


Then also under

CATS NTCA Airworthiness Standards:
24.01.2.A.6 Instruments, equipment and placards 3 (C)

(c) a fire-proof plate on the instrument panel, containing the following information:
• Name of the constructor or manufacturer;
• Aircraft type and model;
• Aircraft registration letters and serial or build number;
• Engine make and model and horse power;
• Date of manufacture.


Any assistance will be much appreciated since this is the only item still outstanding on my ramp inspection list.

Stainless Steel aircraft data plate. 2-1/2" X 4-1/4" with VAF logo. Ready to engrave or stamp with your aircraft information. Rivets to your fuselage with (4) corner rivets.

I would suugest making your own. Get said stailess steel plate and then just get tap set or engrave. Am sure Metal Centre in Selby would even be able to cut one for you if you wanted more fancy.

The Cubby just has a blik one. I don't have a pic of it, but it was dead simple and was made with the same set of letters they use to make dog tags I am told...

I made the Turbi`s trim tab out of stainless steel plate, and engraved all the detail on that. Double duty. vhpy

Speaking to Piet, they only need the

Make and Model
Serial number
Registration.
They are not concerned about the engine details

The reg says on the dash or near the door. The aiframe is a better option than the dash.

Thats interesting ... is this the same Piet that categorically states that they dont make the rules/laws, they are simply there to enforce them to the letter? Seems a little inconsistent to me that the law gets quoted on some things and on others they appear to have some discression... or maybe its just me getting confused.

hmm... I think I will stick to what the regulation says since the next inspector might not share his views and enforce the law.

it is a good point

but there are so many duplications, for example, you need the ATF which has an expiry date, then on the flight folio, you have a inspection reminder = expiry date. On the fireproof plate, you need to specify the engine, but the engine is in the aircraft and easily identified. I Understand the need to have a fireproof registration number and perhaps serial number, either are enough via the documentation at CAA to identify the aircraft.

The flight folio, to most purposes is a complete duplication of the log book and so on.

The biggest problem is the model, serial number and registration generally stay with the aircraft for life. The engine doesn't

I agree about the engine Morph, but I specifically asked the gents from CAA on Friday night if the Registration Number HAD to be included since it could change. The reply was that it doesnt... well, mine DID in November (from EDN to RDR) and that is why I need a new plate in the first place! It appears that the one fitted by the factory is not CATS compliant in any event!

Sigh, I am just going to do it by the book then they can inspect me, I'll be compliant and they can get on with whatever it is that they do best.
