Advise on Illegal flying required

Postby coastwise » Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:07 pm

Hi guys.
I have the situation in Port Alfred where I am the only trike flying here as far as 43 Air School is aware. When I started my training in Grahamstown a friend of mine told me about someone he knows flying here as well without a lisence, as well as the trike being unregistered and unlisenced.

The Air School has approached my wife as she works for them asking about someone flying a trike within their ATA and not using a radio or responding to repeated calls to him, obviously thinking its me.

This guy flies out of a farm strip as far as I am aware. He is flying to within 1.5 to 2 kilos from the airfield. Port Alfred airfield has about 300 aircraft movements per day.

My question to the legal flyers is what would you do about this type of situation?

I have been to speak to the powers that be at 43 Air School to let them know it is not me, but they want to sort this situation out before he kills someone.

Report him to the police since he is breaking the law and should be locked up. Klaar.
May be easier said than done if you are not sure where he is flying from...

So are you suggesting you are not a legal flyer

If you know who it is, is it not your duty to sort it out before he does kill someone. What would you ask yourself if a fatal accident did happen and you took no action?

It is a difficult situation - I would almost bet that 50% of all pilots have known of some illegal flying and not taken any action. My belief is that we have to take a zero tolerance attitude to individuals that will ultimately make life difficult for the law abiding pilot.

Agree

I feel that every person in the aviation industry, espesially pilots/instructers has a obligation to report these matters.
The legal begals is only gonna use that as an excuse to show there is no control in that aviation sector resulting in more stringer laws being implemented to curb this tipe actions.

When has anybody actually asked you for your pilot's license?. It's actually probably easier to fly without one than you think. There is really not much enforcement of that. If you have your own little aerie and a strip on your farm and you never fly into big airports you can fly for years without anybody checking anything on it or you.
When I was a boy I knew a couple of old freestate farmers that flew long after their licenses has been pulled. The one only stopped flying after he crashed his piper colt through a bundle of telephone wires.

For sure - I never meant to make it sound like it was Ok or condoned. I was trying to say that there is actually not much enforcement of that and I don't really know one will do that. His particular license was pulled because he failed his medical on reasons of vision and it proved to be right when he flew through the wires - he simply never saw them. Well the airplane was a write-off after that and that was finally the end of his flying as he couldn't legally obtain another.

No, meant the same, somebody must do something, but its must start by reporting such incidents.

Otherwise why must anyone go for a licence, medical and al that costly stuff that u are legally bound to do.

Think they just harming the industry and are selfish.

When did you phone the traffic cop when the guy in front of you overspeed or drive over the white line?,this is far more dangerouse to a lot of people than this farmer or cowboy.I would think that the guy that flys illigal will not pull any stunts because he knows he will be in a lot of shit if caught and think that his preflight and aircraft will be of a very high standard as for the same reason.sometimes I wish I had the balls to show caa the middel finger and fly without all the over regulated bull .its all about money not the safety aspect. If this guy causing k@k burn him if not let him fly for free the sky belong to all

I think instead of alienating him ( he did himself) land on his strip and ask what you can do to legalise him i.e. point him to an AP, RAASA invite him to the tower to see what his consequences could be to a nervious pupil Nigerian or Pakistani and invite him on a fly in once he's legal.

Just have to drop the line to the tannie whilst you're scoffing her rusks that should he "Hurrie Curry' she'll be getting jack.

And then you'll have an alternative strip to go play at.

Too many ex trikers now ppl that haul out the vintage windlass for a few circuits when there's no one looking.

Report the guy to the Chairman of Misasa - Mr Alex Rudd

It is illegal and if something happens then we all get a bad name again

Sorry - I don't call traffic - i act myself and so must we all.

If u read the previous post - one guy did show CAA and ended up in a bundle of telephone wires. And so did many in the passed, but with that attitude somebody is going to get "injured". That is facts - no im not a pilot and i can see the logic in that. Fly within the rules.

Rule are not there to be bent so it can suite us - we al have to abide by it to create a safe flying enviroment - and its not about the money. Me think get a licence before u fly.
