Rotax and Avgas

Postby Tracer » Fri Mar 13, 2009 12:36 pm

Can you use Avgas (premixed) in the Rotax 503 / 582? What will the effects be? :?: (**)

Unless you getting it for free why on earth would you want to?.

Well, we planning a nice flight and will need to refuel, I suspect the wife will join on the trip, so can't carry extra fuel. We want to stop over at FAPN (Pilanesburg), and they only got Avgas. Considering all options here. The easy one obviously will be to send a groud crew there with fuel, but where's the fun in that? (^^)

I'm no expert, but what I have heard, is that it will work fine, but your fuel consumption will be a lot higher.

You need to find more advise on this. Maybe phone Niren at AE!!

There is no problem and it won't change a thing - also no change in fuel consumption(don't know where that comes from). If that is all you can get hold of use it. Was just thinking to myself that it's really expensive fuel to use in an engine that has no benefit or need for it.

In the "old" days it used to be cheaper than Mogas.

We have done many trips where we had to top up with avgas on the 912 and have never had any problems! Even works fine if you still have mogas in the tank and you need top up! Also no change in consupmtion!!! But we have always gone back to mogas asap!

Enjoy

On the 4strokers Rotax recommend a shortend oil change interval due to the high lead content.
To be sure, check your engine manual.

That is correct but I dont think half a tank every 100 or 150 hours cant make a very very big diff. Try to only use it when you cant get hold of mogas and then change back asap

You are completely safe to do so, the only negative effects, apart from the price of course, is on a 2 stroke your plugs gunge up quicker and on a 4 stroke, extended use will require oil replacement sooner.

Nope - 912/914 made specifically for unleaded. Nothing good about running it on avgas. Fouls the plugs and gets deposits on the back of the valves.
