Mabula

Postby Low Level » Mon Sep 08, 2008 5:33 pm

Friends of ours spent the weekend at Mabula, therefore a great oppurtunity to spread the wings. My first long trip  with the sofness - 1.5 hrs into a 20 - 30 mph headwind on Saturday. Still had a great trip, and quite a nice surprise when we landed. Parked next to a fellow microlighter's plane on the ground. Lekker te recognize planes in remote areas.

Unfortunately didn't see Ian, and when we left yesterday, he was already on his way - or at home. :( Had a lekka tailwind coming home - saw 100 mph quite often on the GPS with 85 mph on the ASI.

Hi Ldel

Was that you I heard on the radio yesterday? I was at Zebula next door and returned late yesterday afternoon. I heard someone in a gyro from Mabula to Rhino.

Might have been. We took off at 16:40 for Rhino park, via the crater and Temba. Had a quick peek at a project we're busy with in Temba. When we were 20 miles out, a helicopter - ZS PSO if I remember correctly - also took off heading to Wonderboom.

With what did you return ?

Hi Ldel, sorry I didnt see you, I was holed up at a tented camp called Kwafubesi (sized for 6 couples) about 2 miles south of the airstrip, also part of Mabula. We watched the end of the rugby at main Mabula then drove South...

I flew up (almost due North from Summit) around 3Pm on Saturday, didn't have the headwind you had, but Sunday return at around 10AM was great, also > 100 MPH ground speed. Actually quite a weekend for flying, I passed Rhino on Sat Am on the way back from Barberton (story posted elsewhere).

Only traffic I heard from Zebula was a 210 zooming off..

Cheers ian

Hi Ldel

ja I heard you speaking to the chopper. I left at about 4 and was nearing the northern ridge at HBV when I heard you. I was in a GT450. We actually met when your rotor bolt thingy broke at Aeroden and you left your gyro there.

I fly up there at least once or twice a month. I will let you know next time and you can come in for breakfast.

Aaaahhh - so you accompanied that mossie. Standing there covered on its own, I thought it was part of Mabula's furniture.

I flew north from Rhino past Rust de Winter dam - fine. When I turned north - west to Mabula, then the rotax struggled. :?

Yip my intentions as well, but the braai fire was lazy. Did pre-flight while wiping gravy from my mouth. Must say I really relied on that tailwind. (**)
