That is a bit harsh Uncle Spud, I actually take offence to your comments as you have no idea what other personal committments we have. I am not going to stand on my soap box and sprout crap about my own personal contribution to society or the fact that the high interest rates are causing havoc with my mortagage repayments. I choose to commit to certain causes when I can afford to do so, and I have done so on this very site on a few occasions. As have many other "Microlighters". Life is harsh squire, high interest rates, high fuel costs and high inflation are taking a huge toll on all our budgets. All some of us can do is offer an ear or a word of condolence.

Now get off your soap box

The post is topically correct. I find this passionate outburst in bad taste and reeking of Klipdrift.

I agree Big D, freedom of expression and all that other stuff, but I take exception to the members of this forum being attacked for no good reason. From my experience help is always at hand but finances do restrict many people.

Hey Spud,

A lot of people offered condolences and support. However not all can contribute financially. Some guys are losing houses and selling aeroplanes just to make ends meet. Look at the for sale section and see how many reluctant sellers there are. I know, I HAD to sell my plane 8 years ago and it broke my heart. However family came first.
Also a lot of microlighters do not even come onto this forum. 90% of the pilots at my airfield didn't even know about the Conti's tragedy until I told them about it this weekend.
Yes, South Africans are great people and South Africa is a great place and I personally will help out a fellow man where possible, however there are limits.

Just felt a few statement were a bit harsh my mate.

Cheers,

Dear Jerry C. Murphy

I have read most of your posts since you joined microlighters way back when and have seen most of the favourable responses you have received from a community that has taken you and your views in without hesitation.

Your latest post is a blatant disregard for others circumstances and is totally arrogant.

With R100 we can buy 15 loaves of bread ... with GBP 100 you can buy 105 loaves of bread in your own country and 208 in ours!

Makes sense doesn't it Uncle Spud!

Uncle Spud, I'm sure your letter is meant with the best intentions, but found it a bit harsh. I have no doubt the guys who can contribute, will. It's still early days. Also, there are quite a few guys who have contributed and have not noted their contributions.

Not all registered members view the forum regularly. For many, it's not in their home language, or they don't have internet connection, either too old or pre pc, stopped flying coz they lost their plane in an oops, passed on through an oops e.t.c.

So I'm sure some of the (fifty or so) daily visitors will do something.

Point is; and no disrespect to anyone; nobody has lost the ability to feed their family here. Many at some time have suffered similar setbacks -car accidents, medical e.t.c. So whilst it appears normal for a flying guy to acknowledge the loss, it does'nt carry the same weight with a mom having to buy sports kit for the brats.

Flying is an awesome past time, but that's it and Africa's not for sissies.

Now, what to do with my prize? vhpy

Hey Uncle Spud,
I think that your comments are a bit harsh and as leftseat says, people are selling their aeries and houses just to get ends to meet!
We all feel sorry for the guys that lost aircraft, I was so upset I canned my weekend plans to find out as much about this a possibe and also to think how LUCKY I am to not have lost an aircraft!
I would have donated loads had I been a working adult! But I'm not and I haven't been able to talk to my parents about donating money on the weekend!
I understand your views and I feel for the people but writing about how we South Africans don't stick together is not the way to share your feelings!
I am not one to hold a grudge so when you come to sa i won't hit you! vhpy

Guys that letter is not that harsh. True what you say lotsa people struggle to make ends meet, and most propably use the work's computer to access the internet to follow their dream in a virtual world - but, this letter appeals to the 99 % that can afford the R 100.

Don't take this personnally - if you have given, good on you. If you can't afford it, no problemo. If you haven't given, and you can afford it - rethink it.

Have you given a thought to R 100 and what the average middle class spend every day. For the price of fish and chips for a Friday in front of the tv, or a Bulls rugby ticket - wasted money - makes a difference to somebody else.

Remember the North coast hangar fire - can't remember the field  - tomorrow it might be you who appeal to the masses.

Good on you Uncle for your passion - shaken, but not stirred.

You're gonna fit in lekker with that Limpopo boere - passionate people those.

Dear Jerry,

I find your post in poor taste.

South Africans do not easily suffer unjust attacks on character and this is how I read your letter.

By resorting to direct or indirect insults you have attacked the very foundation of South Africans.

We are a proud people, independent, inventive and above all self sufficient.

We don’t easily beg nor do we easily open up, even to close friends and family, about personal problems.

By resorting to personal character assassination albeit on a broad level, whether well meaning or otherwise you have not done the Forum or those on it a service.

Your letter also has undertones of “big brother” knowing better and telling us how to behave.

This Forum functions without strife and in a spirit of camaraderie.

You have rocked the boat severely and I suspect all your future posts will not receive the same amount of interest as before.

I hope you read and receive this posting in the spirit in which it is intended.

I wish you and your family well with your relocation

Kind regards

Gunter Rostek
