Spark?

Im really sukkeling to get a 503 started (takes about 100 pulls and plenty :evil: :evil: :evil: ).


Once she is running and warmed up there is no problems, she can be started with one hand, its just the initial startup for the day.

Carbs are properly jetted, fuel flow is fine. I have tried starting with choke, without choke, primed it, not primed it, cleaned the plugs etc etc.

I have a suspicion it may be weak spark, or a spark timing issue- how do i know if im on the right track? Are there any checks i can perform to check the spark timing or strength? Perhaps stator coils?

Is it single or dual ign? If it is dual: check your spark-plug gaps. Critical on the dual ign models. If it is a single ign, its way past sell by date. Get rid of it and buy a dual ign. :D :wink:

When I had excatly that problem I fitted a primer after I realised that a sqiurt of juice straight into the carbs did the tric. NEVER looked back untill this day. Try it. 8)

Care to elaborate on this primer? What does it look like, where do you buy it? I have seen one on DF's airy, a rubber device you squeeze and it shoots petrol into the carbs?

Dave, more like a syringe, not a rubber type thingie. I imported a few and San and I have both fitted them.

What it does is that it squirts some fuel straight into the throat of the carb intakes BEYOND the actual carb "system" itself (hope you get the idea) Almost like putting fuel straight into the engine, onto the pistons :shock:

Works everytime :D :D

Stront Boet!!! I've got an old single ign, dual carb 503, fitted inverted in my Basic and it starts sooooooo easy, even when it;s cold. Throttle on idle, full choke and give it three to four good pulls, switch ign on and pull again with full choke. She usually starts immediatly. Slowly reduce choke while increasing throttle. Warm up and go fly.

I agree with you,you must pull it a few times and then when you switch the ignition on and pull,it starts easy.

I've got both the pump thing and the push / pull thing. To be honest I normally just use the pump and in that doesn't work I use both.

Good morning
the aerrie iceman mentioned above had a primer inline when we got the
aerrie.We got adviced "told" :evil: to remove it as it is only more things
that could go wrong during start-up.The rest is history as we spin 70-100
times before she would start.We are the only pilots that walk around
without jackets after start -up.
Thanks San & Oom Eend that primer is going back on the aerrie this week-end. :evil: :twisted: :oops: :shock: :) :D
Will give report back in the week.
p.s Iceman is busy moving office ...will be back on forum shortly.

Good day all "battling"to start 503's
Feedback on starting problem.As mentioned above we had "SERVEEEERE"
starting problems.Both of us being medics we sommer took a 10ml.syringe and injected 5ml.per carb.Just before we removed our jackets we opted to first try and see.........guess what :shock: :shock: :lol: :D :D On the first propspin we had start.
Both myself and Iceman was stunned for a second.Motor stopped again and we gave her another dose 5ml.each.She started like a dream on the second or third spin.
So in a nutshell the single ignitions want that extra gas down the throat of each carb.....The primer is going on in the week just need to get 3 way adaptors.

Sorry for delayed response, im still waiting for "Sperm-Count" (Telkom :evil: :evil: ) to relocate my ASDL line so i-net is scarce.

As Woody said she started on the very first spin, neither of us were expecting it to actually fire. I wish you could of seen the looks on our faces when she took..... :shock: , the shock nearly killed us.. the very next thing i did was to check the registration to make sure we had the right plane wheeled out.........

Lets not even go there :roll: :evil: ............ Ive been flying S/I since 1996 and have never had the need to change.

How many of the well know instructors and APs today, learned on S/I :?: :?: This particular problem was solved with 5 mls petrol :!:

It would be interesting to do a quick poll as to how many M/L`s have actually been saved by having duel ign.......... nice to have but its not the begining and end of flying :!:
