Interference on intercom

I get a buzzing noize on my intercom system as soon as you plug in the headset of the pax. If you accelerate ( increase revs )the pitch of the sound goes up and when the revs come down the noize comes down with it. But it there all the time. When I fly alone there is aboslutely nothing. Dead quiet. It comes only if you flick the switch on to communicate with the pax that the noize is there.
Any fundis who might have an answer to my problem?

An Englishman to the rescue again.

Take pax headset – clip open the headset on the side with the mic boom – turn mic gain fully clockwise [closed] – clip headset back together.

Don’t send me a thank you note – just pitch at the next function ‘coz “Jy is ‘n Boerseun en sal jou maatjies nooit drop nie”

For that matter, should'nt i just do it with both of them?
Its like a squelsh (sic ) noise.

Hi Bacchus,

There will only be one adjustable pot [potentiometer].

The pax’s headset is too close to the “noise”. Once the mic gain is turned down, the intercom squelch should be able to give you nice quiet comms.

You can always open the squelch a little on the ground before take-off if necessary.

Is the mic gain and the squelsh the same thing?
If not, i presume the mic gain is in the headset and the squelch must be somewhere else. Where?

1st tip – ask Ranger to give you his broken keel tube. You can keep it in the corner of your hanger and use it as a tooth pick when necessary. It won’t corrode either – nice!

Ask John [who must not come to any harm yet] to help you find the balance between the squelch and the mic gain. Usually, with the pax’s mic gain turned down, the intercom squelch should be sufficient for the obtaining of the optimum background noise level through the headsets.

Hey John. You leave my keel tube alone. I'm gonna hang it in the doorway of the shit house so every time I need to go do the number it'll moer me on the head and remind me to DIP THE WING. Mind you it's broken in two places so I can hang it in both shit house doorways and from the sun visor in my car. Still gotta find use for the prop though. Maybe with a bit of duct tape I can build a wind generator in the back yard.

By the way Ranger – fit a Warp Drive again. Have read your questions and the various responses. My 2c anyway.

Oh yes Ranger – the other thing. Thanks a mil for your offer regarding the compass bracket. I have “upgraded” and bought a dash / panel mounted compass. Fitted it with a hole-saw [very neatly]. Fortunately the magnetic deviation is really marginal and not worth bothering about.

John. How fast can Baccus run because I can move if I have to. Please send me a photo of the compass and what make it is. I'm busy laying out my new dash (aquilla 2 pod and I make the fibreglass pods if anybody wants). I just had to get some marketing in.
It's a good idea to have everything together if the electrics don't affect the compass too much. What instrument pod have you got?

Are both headsets the same? Sometimes mismatched headsets can cause problems. If you fly with your pax' headsets alone, do they work okay?

I have the “large” Aquilla Pod. The compass is equally spaced between the ASI, Altimeter & VSI – no electrics.

Rule of thumb – compass must be more than 150mm from RPM, fuel gauge etc. to avoid RF induced magnetic deviation.

Probably at the same speed as a tortoise in a good sprint. Takes a while for Bacchus to get up to speed and a bigger problem presents itself when he has to stop suddenly – been through the back wall of the hanger twice !!

But boetie, be careful, we can hire some fast runners if need be.
