Hi All

Hi Grant, sadly to say the Bose A20 noise cancellation will not work in an open cockpit environment. I learnt a very expensive lesson and still have both my Bose A20s mothballed for my PPL a little later.grantr wrote:Hi All

Finding a helmet which is comfortable when worn OVER a headset was also a challenge for me. Some guys seem ok with the solution, but it never worked well for me. Also, in the case of the Bose A20, it has a very thick plastic headband that tends to cause discomfort when worn under a helmet.
I have opted for an integrated headset/helmet solution from Italy (designed for paraglider pilots http://www.icaro2000.com), which still comes in cheaper than a set of Bose A20s and works like a dream! Comfort and perfect sound clarity! #GAMECHANGER

Hi John, are these available locally or does one need to import?John.com wrote:Hi Grant, sadly to say the Bose A20 noise cancellation will not work in an open cockpit environment. Sadly, you need to import. They build them to order, and order in the headset option you select from a third party supplier, so expect 6-8 weeks.wackomedic911 wrote:Hi John, are these available locally or does one need to import?John.com wrote:Hi Grant, sadly to say the Bose A20 noise cancellation will not work in an open cockpit environment. Another really nice feature is that it truly is a one-size-fits-all, as they come with inserts for the various head sizes.
Oh, also, the 'rollbar' option for face protection (see image below)
I have two in the Hartebeespoort area, and would be happy to let you trial one so as to eliminate the risk of importing a helmet 'blind', so let me know. Dual-socket connector option.
Out of interest, the Icaro 2000 helmets were used in the solar powered around the world flight (http://www.solarimpulse.com)
see sample Icaro 2000 helmet here

I bit the bullet and got two of the carbon fibre finish version of the Omega 2. Sheer luxury compared to anything else available. http://icaro2000.com/Products/Helmets/Omega/Omega.htmwackomedic911 wrote:Thanks John. Wich ones do you have?

Let me say again, they are fairly pricey (to avoid 'Nkandla duties' I had mine shipped to the U.K. and then brought them back with me after a business trip).
However, the difference in comfort and voice quality is remarkable.
Out of interest, for a nominal amount extra, I ordered the under-chin skirt that zips closed off the rollbar, which makes winter flying in SA just that much more tolerable.
Also, as a final comment, the Omega 2 helmet, being 'full-face' and with ears fully enclosed does take a little getting used to, but once flying it is heaven!!
