Does any one know what is involved in importing a plane from Zimbabwe?
I know the plane has to be de-registered before it can be registered in SA but does any one know the procedure and costs associated with it?
Importing a Plane??

If older than 15 years you need CAA permission. If NTCA speak to Sandra Chauke or Andre Swannepoel. Need import permit (DTI 7 days) but first SARS import code (28 days). Forex approval from reservebank.
Costs would depend on how you bring it in. Cheapest would be to fly it back. If were me I would fly it back. VAT will have to be paid at some stage, but get the aerie here then sort out the BS. Zim is not far so if you have to you could fly it back and then redo if you missed something..... Packing into container or trailering is a huge schlepp. I fetched the KR in Melkbosstrand and it took 38hrs on the road to get it back to Jhb, but it was not flyable... There will be some damage (even the RV which was packed by experts who do this for a living had some container rash...)
PS
Some tips
Keep it reg'd on the Zim reg until it here (so you or someone with Zim license can fly it) When ready to deregister CAA require foreign CAA to fax cancellation to them direct.
Get copy of latest auth to fly (CAA are less skeptical & makes process easier)
If there are no other eg's in SA, then be preparred for a looooong process.
Get original logs (else will have to do proving flights all over again, which may have to be done in any case)
Get or write POH.
Keep us posted......

Thanks folks. The plane is already in the country but still registered in Zim. Authority to fly has lapsed and I am trying to decide if it is worth the schlep of de/re-registering before I make an offer. Would there be anything to pay to the Zim authorities (CAA, Tax autorities, Bob's retirement fund) ??

Would suggest you deregister ASAP or you may have to pay for Zim CAA's co-operation. Maybe even get them to scrap it. Local CAA just want to make sure aerie is not reg'd on more than 1 countries register....
Some pics... Assume it the Zim Blunder Turd?
PS
Collette (sp?) at van zyls aviation services is a gold mine of info. It def worth the bucks to use her to get it done in person rather than via post or sometimes even in person...

Thats the one. Zim CAA want to see a pile of broken bits before they will scrap it. Will post some pics if I buy it. Have offered to advertise it on the forum if I do not. Will keep you posted.RV4ker wrote:Would suggest you deregister ASAP or you may have to pay for Zim CAA's co-operation. Maybe even get them to scrap it. Maybe sign a contract that you are buying it as spares for reassembly/rebuild? (Thinking aloud?) Gotta be a way....
When I bought RV I was considering a Glassair III and that how we were gonna do it as the Yanks have serious liability issues.... Aparently it is a legit way of doing it?
Saw similar ebay listing last week....
