Re: instructors rating
You need to check with Dave Daniels as he is the one who put the "ban" in place as far as Misasa is concerned.RV4ker wrote:Has ban been lifted?

As far as CAA is concerned there has never been a "ban".
PM me if you want more details...

When speaking to Rob Hill at our wings dinner, he indicated that MISASA had 'given up' trying to patrol the instructor ratings and are now leaving it completely up to CAA. Was taking too much time and effort and they were never really able to get it right as far as ensuring all applications came via MISASA.

Re: instructors rating
On Rob Hill's request, David, together with Geoff Dyer decided to ask CAA for a temporary moratorium on Microlight Instructors ratings to be issued. We went to a meeting with Sakhile Reiling at SACAA (head of Safety), and she agreed that it was needed. This was then communicated to the members of MISASA, but CAA decided not to communicate this to their licensing department, and eventually did nothing.wart wrote:You need to check with Dave Daniels as he is the one who put the "ban" in place as far as Misasa is concerned.RV4ker wrote:Has ban been lifted?

The reason this was asked for was after 4 fatalaties caused by instructors who did not go through the MISASA route to get their ratings. There is no sylabus for Instructors in South Africa, and no criteria at CAA for the rating other than the patter and flight test. After requestion a list of "MISASA" vs "Non-MISASA" instructors from CAA, it became apparent that there are over twice as many "non-MISASA" instructors as "MISASA" instructors.
Unfortunately, no one gives a damn, so the ratings kept being issued, and MISASA decided to wash its hands from ALL instruction matters. This is the only reasonable course of action, as in the meeting which we attended, MISASA was blamed for the low standard of training and accidents of ALL microlight Instructors, including those MISASA had no knowledge off.
The energy spent on instructural matters, reduced the support MISASA could give to its members, and I personally think that if you could have MISASA free from Instructor matters, you could now use them for some quality control, and to handle complaints from students against instructors properly.

Thanks for all replies, but what is final outcome (Assume it still open season?). Where can I find more info?
Reason I ask is that I am wanting to do 3 axis instructors rating in next 3 months. Please point me in right direction. Gauteng guys have been quiet. Know Fawgie just done his and Dave, FF and others seem to have KZN sown up, but who is best to talk to in Jhb? Pref close to East Rand as I based in Edenvale...

Hi RV4ker
Try Mike Cathro. I don't know how far you will have to travel, but he is pretty good, and if he can't help you, he can point you in the right direction. He knows all the 3-axis instructors up there. Tel: 082 928 2744
Alternative is to come down here, stay at the airfield and get your Dragonfly (best toy in the world) conversion at the same time

Looked at it long and hard before I bought the 4. Price of the Evo (and op costs of IO540) are the killers. IMHO The RV4 is best bang for the buck available (unless you build your own aerie).. Costs less than most to run and is huge amounts of fun. Flies with Trikes or Bonnies and anywhere in between.

Some confusion.
Allow me to set the record straight.
First of all (and this is for Wart's attention), I , David Daniel, did not of my own accord 'ban' anything. What a stupid statement.
What I did call for, after consulting with the MISASA committee and my 2IC Geoff Dyer, was a TEMPORARY MORATORIUM on new issues of instructor ratings. The moratorium was to be lifted now, in Jan 2006.
The reason for this has been set out by FF - basically MISASA was being undermined by CAA and many other Grade A instructors who do not care about MISASA and the long term result of a 'one-for-all and all-for-one' help yourself to a microlight instructor rating.
While this moratorium was hopefully going to be in place, MISASA was going to submit a National Standard to CAA for their approval, for all future microlight instructors.
MISASA was not and never has been in favour of limiting new blood. What MISASA was trying to achieve was stopping CAA from issuing ratings.
The final result of all this is that MISASA has officially withdrawn all involvement in instructor matters. See the latest Microflight News for official notice.
MISASA has, at least until the next AGM, kept the portfolio Head of Training and Licencing open, and I am merely serving the members of MISASA (Read if you are paid up
) with advice regarding instructor matters.
RV4kr, please contact me. I will assist you.
So Wart, an apology from you for your uneducated ugly statement would be appreciated.

Hi ZU ANE.
Yes, you are wrong. Very, very wrong.
There is absolutely no click between any A grade instructors. I promise you that. As head of training I cannot even get the guys to talk to each other, let alone form a 'click'.
Previously, MISASA would have been able to steer you in the right direction.
As things stand now, you are wellcome to contact me if you are a paid up MISASA member, and I will assist you as much as I can.
Offering Instructor Courses for new instructors is quite a schlepp factor if you offer a good course. This is why you will battle to find a school which is dedicated to offering instructor courses.
You are also wellcome to call CAA operations/licencing/safety and ask them where you can do a microlight instructor course, and what the syllabus is. They will be clueless, and I hope you tell them so. If they tell you to contact MISASA, please remind them that MISASA no longer have any interest in microlight training/upgrades of instructors, and that therefore it is CAA's responsibility and duty to assist you. Go straight to the commissioner if you have to.
Good luck.
David

Re: instructors rating
lamercyfly, my reference to the word "ban" was put, as it it here, as a QUOTATION as stated by RV4ker!RV4ker wrote:Has ban been lifted?
As for your comment that it was an "uneducated ugly statement" is totally out of line. I see it as I read it, and here I refer to the letter stating that the "moratorium" had been put in place was signed by yourself as Head of Training for MISASA! Come on; chill out and relax. I guess the weather has been so bad that you haven't managed to fly much (as most of us in KZN) and now you are feeling a bit tense? As Head of Training maybe you should have stepped in a long time ago and explained Misasa's actions and then the people on this forum, and others, would have know exactly where thet stood.
As for Geoff Dyer being consulted, why then did he decide to go ahead in do an Instructors Course late in 2005? Maybe he thought that it was a bit too much? Only guessing but maybe I should ask him for his comments on the matter and post it here for everyones information?
Really, I have been attacked too many times on this forum for it to be a pleasure! For everyone to know, I am still a student pilot who is yet to go solo and I am here to learn and keep myself abreast of what is new and happening. I am on the forum for the enjoyment of it and not to be attacked when asking questions or stating the obvious.
Please give me a break, will you?
