Omaruru Microlighters

I am currently on holiday with my in-laws in Karibib, Namibia. I went through to Omaruru this morning and after escaping from the women who wanted to visit the local chocolate factory, I discovered the small airstrip there.

The resident caretaker kindly showed me around the hangars. Very impressive little set up!

Unfortunately there were no fellow pilots around. If anybody from Omaruru reads this and is planning on flying this week sometime I would really appreciate a shout so that we could meet up and swap "war" stories. Must be amazing to fly around up here. Beautiful landscape and bush too fly over!

You just stumbled over one of the core micro light places in Namibia, the other being Swakopmund. Most flying over weekends as pilots are from places outside Omaruru.

Great to hear from you and even greater to hear that you have indeed discovered probably our largest (although small in your terms) gathering of mlights in Nam.
We actually had something going in UIS this past weekend. Uis is a little mining town about 100km north west of Omaruru. A fellow mlighter, Nico van Dyk, was killed in a vehicle accident a few weeks ago(just outside Omaruru on the way to Wilhelmstal). He was a Uis resident. His brother expressed his wishes to have his ashes scattered over the Brandberg, Namibia's highest point(about 8300 ft).
So, on Sunday morning 11 Oct, 6 or 7 trikes took off from Uis and we climbed up to 9500(some even 10500ft) over the mountain, each with his bag of ashes and we did it - quite something I must say - and VERY VERY VERY high considering the elevation there is about 2000ft. From the ground it was impossible to see a trike in the air at that height. I was only a passenger as my trike are 400km away - and I was VERY scared. But weather was absolutely find and not even that cold.
Two trikes from Omaruru actually flew there on Saturday pm and back about Sunday midday. Three more came from Swakop and Walvis and 2 were from Uis itself.
If I would have known about you, we could have made a plan.
I will PM you with some contact details of myself and someone in Omaruru whom I am sure would gladly meet up with you and even give you his trike for a flip.
