New Circuit procedures for Morning Star

Postby Morph » Fri Aug 07, 2009 12:11 pm

HI all,

I'll move this into Airfields and destinations later but for maximum impact I am placing this in Hangar Talk

With immediate effect the procedures for Morning Star are

Frequency 124.8
02/20, 680 meter tarred, 8 meters wide.
200ft AMSL
Circuits strictly to the east of the N7
Call at least 1 minute out, a minimum of 1 mile (further for faster planes) even from the west (Red Circle). I know technicaly you are in 125.8 to the west of the field, but for safety sake please change frequency to 124.8 round about the railway line (light blue)

Fixed wing
Join overhead at 1500ft
Descend in the Dead Zone to the immediate west of the field,(Purple Zone) crossing the field at 1200ft and joining the relevant downwind at 900ft. The Fixed Wing circuit is a larger circuit. (Green Circuit)

Trike Circuit
Join overhead at 800ft
descend in the dead zone an cross the runway at 700 ft, nothing lower
Join the smaller trike circuit (yellow) at 500ft

Please refrain from flying in the dead zone unless you are joining the circuit for the landing.

Hey Morph,

Have you made a mistake? You can have different circuit altitudes but NOT different joining altitudes! There must be one joining altitude for all then a procedure is followed to get into the circuit.

This now means that trikes will join at an altitude that other aircraft have to descend through..

I suggest overfly at 1800ft, join at 1500 ft and standard circuit at 1200. Trike circuits at 800ft. Fisantekraal has this and it works very well.

Just my thoughts..
Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

Flying-i, I am also concerned about the two different joining altitudes. I feel there needs to be a single joining altitude of 1500ft.

However this is a committee decision not mine. I will take your concerns to the commitee

Morning Star is 200ft AMSL and Fisantekraal 399ft, hence our circuit being lower than theirs.

I have just read through the "Chirp" publication no 40. There is a discussion on airfields with these dual circuits and joining finals where there are blikkies & microlights. Also of interest is the gyro rotor wash discussion.
Link below.

Surely this needs to be published before it can be 'enforced'? Failing that a VFR pilot joining using standard umanned airfield procedure would be considered the pilot in the 'right'.

Standard circuits for blikke is 1000ft AGL. Fisantekraal circuit is 1200ft, because departure level is 1500ft. and that would have conflicted with circuit alt if circuit was flown at 1400ft. Surely there is no sense in that I must join in my trike 100ft below your circuit alt in you bushbaby. What if one of us got wrong qnh?? ?!@? ?!@?

I feel that morningstar should have same procedure as fisantekraal. Join 2000ft. Depart 1500ft. Fixed circuit 1200ft. Trike circuit 900ft. If it could be the same, it would be one less procedure to remember.

I do believe we need to keep this simple and easy to remember gets too complicated with dif joining altitudes
