Tariff hike ‘shame’ for SA at Iata

SA’s Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) was humiliated in front of its peers yesterday when it was named and shamed by the International Air Transport Association (Iata) for seeking a 44% tariff hike next year, writes Julius Baumann.
But Iata may have jumped the gun as it is still far from certain that ATNS will receive the requested increase, the first in three years.
Airline executives are meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for Iata’s annual meeting, where it has called for a major resizing and reshaping of the air transport value chain as airlines battle the global economic crisis.
Euro-control states of Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland were also named — for proposed charge increases of 27%- 32%.
