Hi there.

I am looking for some advice (again).

We have just bought a new PC for my in-laws. They still have dial-up and it is the biggest waste of time ever. Could anyone point me in the right direction for an affordable ADSL or similar connection please? Keep in mind that they are retired and have to look after the finances more than ever with the current economic situation.

They do not need massive download capabilities, but speed so they can use Skype Videocall etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get them a 3-G modem and with a pre-paid sim. Convert airtime to data bundle only as needed then nothing waisted! They are also portable.... Check the reception in their area first though! Just a thought!

Hi Cali.....that's about the best, cheapest and fastest way to get connected.
If they own a cellphone on contract, then it's easy. Just add a 3G modem to the existing contract. You get the modem and the total cost is R349.00 per month for 1 gig data. (I think there's cheaper options available for less data) Can also be topped up as and when needed. Have a look at Vodacom.co.za website for the various packages. They can take the modem (looks like a memory stick) anywhere with them (with a laptop, if they have) and connect anywhere, anytime where there's 3G reception.
If they run out of airtime, take the simcard out of the modem, put it in a cellphone and buy airtime on that simcard's number. Then convert airtime into data time (*111# and press "call" on the cellphone and follow the sms prompts) and put the simcard back in the modem.
MTN now allows you to accumulate unused data time at the end of the month whereas Vodacom doesn't. (They may have implemented it also already to counter MTN's move)

R 249 for 500meg on contract with modem (R189 bolt-on if you use your 3G cellphone & Bluetooth)

Register on vodacom4me.co.za and get e-mail address etc.

Hiya Duck - Vodacom has also implemented data carry over for 60 day window as from the 1st of April... they can't let the opposition be better than they are!
There is also a standard package as well as an advanced package available. The out of bundle rates are also the same as the in bundle rates....

Thanks for that guys. Dial-up is not only very slow, you still have to pay for the phone call anyway. I will get onto this asap.
