Stephan, only saw your thread now. When I got the plane, I took the EGT guage out and had it tested at Aviation Engines. They connected their probes, heated them and looked at the reading. Niren concluded that the guage is OK and it must be the probes. He told me that a change in probe lead length could result in wrong reading. Thus my conclusion. After evaluating the vital signs (e.g. plug colours), I left it at that. If the EGT reading of 800 - 900C was correct, the engine would not last an hour. This is one of the reasons I flew it as is and disregarded the EGT's.

Let me know if you determine the cause.

PS: I always used 158 main jets, because it only operated on the Highveld (5'100ft). That should work perfect in Kuruman as well.

thanks tjoek, i decided to leave it as it is as well. I flew her for 30 hrs now and everything looks ok. Last 12 hrs was a trip to hakskeenpan and back the last 3 days(2 guys from aeroden 912s cobra - bennie, a 503 windlass - echard and my hangar mate -also a 503 windlass) . She really fly's like a dream in a bit adverse weather (like we had - 25-35mph headwinds ect bumps galore) . I changed the prop to a nc prop and what a difference that made! The gearbox developed a leak on the propellor shaft during our trip (on the back of the gearbox housing - will need to monitor that - little bit play on the back bearing.)
