"Every once in a while, the microlight chappies also forget their manners, just as some quaddies do. You can take of in Bapsfontein and fly anywhere you like without bugging anyone, but lately a lot of low flying over houses has been happening. Always early in the morning.
It was just a matter of time before someone took a shot at one, or drove a tractor with ripper attached up and down their landing strip. Personally, I am leaning toward the John Deere and Ripper option at present. Surely if he can fly his microlight where he wants, I can ride my old Deere where I want?
At this point, may I say a few words on behalf of us Bapsfonteiners. We are not by nature serial killer. However, after the microlights buzz us awake on Sunday morning and the superbikes prevent us from hearing the minister preaching in the church and the off roaders ruin our noon nap ..... we sort of get into a really shitty mood."
Above is a quote from a farmer from Bapsfontein, just a small idea of how they think or don't??
From the chatquads forum, there are more comments from a quadder who owns a farm in natal as well but I think the above sums up the mindset.

I see noise abatement procedures on the horizon with super quiet exhaust systems etc. a la european laws.
But that will NOT satisfy some "Farmers/Maplottters" who will still think they have every right to take pot shots at any thing they don't like the sound off while sleeping/sitting in church/SMK etc.
Sad very sad what society as a whole is coming to.
Kind regards,
Gunter Rostek

I suppose we should also reaslise that farmers are by nature private people and live out in the middle of nowhere with minimal interaction with others for a reason.
Problem is the intolerance just grows without communication and escalates to ridiculous levels.
People need to see where the two can co exist. classic example is a farmer in Krronstad used to have to chase pouchers and cattle thieves from his farm and used a quad bike for the purpose. Put 2 + 2 together and added a few lodgings to his property he rents out and developed a few trails. With the quads riding on his farm his security problem is sorted as the locals don't dare go near and he now derives an income from it as well.
Time for some of the others to look into the future or they'll lose my support when it comes to reclaiming land for sure.

In the early 90's I learnt to fly weightshifts at Groblersdal. While turning out after taking off we used to fly quite near to a farmer's house. One morning he arrived at the airfield and said that he did not mind us flying there so much but 5o' clock on a Sunday morning was a bit much. he asked if we could avoid his house on Sunday mornings and he would be happy. We just flew on longer before turning cross wind and avoided his house all together. He was happy and we were happy.
Hope you find the idiot who shot at you as this is just not on. I must say I have the same feeling about quad bikes but dont just go shooting at them. rather try to educate them to go to approved tracks rather than screaming around the veld and annoying all and sundry.

I train here, (Microland) and I have just started to do circuits. It was pointed out to me earlier on in my training where I should not fly overhead - remember the guy with the suspended sentence who lives just of finals Runway 021? The problem I have is that it has happened that I inadvertently fly over him - drift, turbulence - (For Godsakes I am a STUDENT pilot - 11 hours!) Does this give him a right to try and kill me? I have great patience on our National Roads when a farmer's equipment is frustrating me, but I don't take potshots at the oke driving the tractor!! Live and let live.

Simple. Exercise common courtesy.
Don't upset the locals, and they have no reason to upset you.

Believe or not I flew a trike before I did the 3-axis thing. Myself and my partner in those days also had a bullet hole through the wing. After much debate we decided that it was a stone. I'm still convinced otherwise but can't proove it.Scarey nevertheless!!

Re: Shooting incident this weekend
Reminds me of the old joke when Jonas took up flying lessons in a Trike..........
As Jonas flies over Oom Gert's farm there in the Karoo Oom Gert pulls out his shotgun and start shooting at the plane like crazy.....
He missus runs out onto the stoep and asks what he is shooting at when Oom Gert coolly answers: "I do not know, but I see it is steeling our workers"

Re: Shooting incident this weekend
...... and over Cullinan Golf course.
There was a red trike over the golf course on the 3 May (morning) that was very annoying. Were you part of the Cullinan festival?
Fly over the golf course if you have to, everybody enjoys the view of an a/c passing, but hell, to stay in that area does not impress anybody on the golf course.
Please be considerate.
Unfortunately I can not blame the “Red Baron†for my golf score that day.
