My instructor, Johann Froneman, always maintains that to fix a trike after a mishap would not cost more than R15k - I saw him put a "complete wreck" back together again for about R11k and at first glance that plane did not look like it could be fixed. And there were no short cuts taken either - if anything looked damaged it was replaced with brand new parts.
Complete destruction say by hangar fire might be a different matter but I never found that type of insurance to be too bad - around R1200 a year if I remember correctly.
I say rather stick the money in the bank than waste it on an insurance policy.

well i had a exsistging life policy which was costing me about R900 per month , the policy had been in place for about 8 months. I then told them that i was into microlighting and that i had just qualified , in April. They then sent me a questionare which asked some basic questions like how much flying i intend doing and type of aircraft that i purchased. they then came back to me and said that microlighting is the second most dangerous sport. They then loaded my premium up to R1650 per month for the same cover. I then had my broker try get other quotes from other companies and they where just as bad. I am currently insured with discovery life as i am also on their medical aid.
I asked them if i had a ballistic chute fitted if that would bring down the premium and they told me that they do not regonise that and there would be no change. So basically i feel like they really scewing me but i need the life cover as anyone else would for the kids sake should anything happen. These guys just look at figures and i don't think any of them understand anything to do with aviation. I guess this is the cost we bear for the love of flying.
