VW 2.1 100HP Info Required
Need some assistance / info on VW 2.1 100HP machine. In the booklet it says leaded or AVGAS only.
I spoke to the manufacturer and he told me that unleaded will also be fine 5 - 8 degrees BTC
Then I called another agent and he told me, unleaded is ok, but I must mix 50 / 50 with AVGAS, otherwise I might
burn valves. Combustion of normal unleaded is to low according to him and will stay in the chamber for to long. He also recommends 5 degrees BTC.
Any more info for me on this subject. Anyone out their owning a machine like this?

Re: VW 2.1 100HP Info Required
The agent is talking bull about the combustion speed. Combustion on unleaded is actually faster than in leaded fuel - hence the requirement of retarding the timing slightly. The issue between leaded and unleaded is that the lead in leaded fuel lubricates the valve seat and assist with cooling it. Most engines can run unleaded fine IF the valve seat is made from the correct grade Stainless steel. If the seats are not the right grade then you will have valve seat recession leading to burnt valves. None of the original VW engines like that did have the right seats for unleaded so unless that is changed(or verified to be of the correct material) I'd suggest not running pure unleaded.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.

So contact Andreno and ask him what valve seats they used. That really is the only with running unleaded.

Hi, ok. The valves are not designed for unleaded, unless an additive, like Valve ease is used.
So I will use LRP for now, until discontinued and then I will start using valve ease as required.
Will also use AVGAS from time to time.
Thanks for all the input, it makes better sense now.

He sold a Volswagen conversion to me, placarded for "LEADED PETROL ONLY". Soon after buying the engine leaded petrol was not available any longer. Then he changed his story AGAIN. "Nooo, it will be faaaaine with unleaded". WTF???? My wifes VW beetle is MOST unhappy with unleaded......

See why I wanted more info. All the stories and advice just doesnt aad up. What did you end up doing? I am thinking about using valve easu as an additive when using unleaded, you think that will do? After the current (unleaded tanks) are empty. I will start using LRP. Is there still a need for additives like Valve ease when using LRP?

If you use LRP then you don't need the valve ease. LRP is meant to be used in the engins that does not have the correct valve seat material.

Piet flies his KR only on Avgas, so wont be of much help to you unless you also go that route. I fly my VW on a mix a of Avgas and anything that I can get at the pumps (have at last 30percent avgas) and timing of 22 deg BTDC with the Turbo. Works fine
