Lightspeed QFR headset - any comms boffins?

Postby Learjet » Mon Nov 10, 2008 1:07 pm

Hi - I fly an open cockpit gyro with an ICOM A200. Previously used Tom-Tom headsets and had 5/5 comms. (In fact often received comments from other pilots and ATC on the quality of comms!) vhpy

"Upgraded" to Lightspeed QFR Solo headsets as they apparently offer far better noise / ear protection. Used them on a recent fly-away and the comms quality has deteriorated significantly to the extent that some tx was unreadable  (according to the other a/c pilots I was flying with - fortunately I was able to change back to the old faithful Tom-Toms which I'd brought along just in case!).

Other than having the jacks changed to fit my plane I'm using them "off the shelf" (from Wings n Things).

Any advice as to what / why the comms should have deteriorated so drastically with the new headsets? I thought it could be wind noise (open cockpit) and fitted additional foam thingymajigs over the mic but made no difference. Help please!

Could be non matching impedance. For some reason I find DC headsets compatible with everything from vintage Brit and Yanqui clunkers to modern high speed chest wigs.

Also good quality and great for open cockpit stuff with a cloth or fibreglass helmet.

Yup could be impedance. QFR's are quite solid and should be good...

DC's are about as bullet proof as you are going to get.
