Authority To Fly Personal Situation
I belief that, like the rest of us, all that our friend Skidmark, wants to do is : JUST FLY. All this yak yakking an shit-stirring is not helping him. At least we can try to give the man some advise. Skids, the truth of the matter about flying is; There is NO free ticket. BUT to be ripped off in this manner is also NOT acceptable. So what is the alternative? Overhaul a perfect engine to keep flyin, or go to a different kind of engine? The HKS engine comes to mind. A friend of mine is going to fit one in his Challenger. I asked to be kept informed of his progress. I can not forsee that the combination will be a miss-match. The long and the short of things is that whatever way you do it, it is going to cost you money. R30+k for overhauling Rattex, or saving up for a new engine. I understand that the HKS is a LOT lighter on petrol. And THAT in itself is already reason enough to consider it. Phil Bristow has an HKS engine on stellenbosch airfield, if you want to go take a look.

They need to tighten up a bit. To much junk in the air.![]()
Based on your previous posts and general tone of them, I too would like to know your real name and what is you do?
My Name is Shawn and I fly from panorama. I certainly dont work for the CAA thats for sure.
I just enjoy aviation, probably as much as you do. My comments are in no way meant to be derogatory. Only to the point.
I also have a trike that is going to have the same problem. My Rotax 462 engine has about 500 hours and I am 100% sure it will never get its ATF renewed unless I change the crank.
My view is on the one hand it looks like the CAA together with the local Rotax agent are trying to make life difficult, on the other hand I can see that all they are doing is following the rules.
The 300 hour crank rule is enforced everywhere else in the world. There are certain exceptions but I dont think they will be allowed here in South Africa. I cant see why Aviation engines and the CAA inspectors are getting so much flack when all they are doing is following the 'rules' as vague as they may be.
I suppose I could say I have some inside info, and that info says the Rule is not going to change. For that reason I am stating the obvious that the only way to keep your ATF is to either replace the crank or change the engine type.
If I decide to keep on flying a trike I will probably replace the Engine with a HKS from Mark Gregson. For 20k more than the overhaul you get an engine that has an 800 hour TBO and uses about 6 litres and hour.
Perhaps these new rules have done us all a favour. We have only every considered Rotax as a power plant.

You should post that line in the "Patch flying" threadChunky wrote: Hey DieselFan

I'm glad thats cleared up cause I was getting worriedChunky wrote: I certainly dont work for the CAA thats for sure.

No, but they can come across as defensive and biast - hence leaving people wondering on motives - but you "cleared" that up above.
You mentioned you'd already done the crank? Fortunate enough to have more than planeChunky wrote: I also have a trike that is going to have the same problem. My Rotax 462 engine has about 500 hours and I am 100% sure it will never get its ATF renewed unless I change the crank.

That I honestly didn't know?Chunky wrote: The 300 hour crank rule is enforced everywhere else in the world.
This is perhaps why the tone of your posts suggests you're an "insider"Chunky wrote: I suppose I could say I have some inside info, and that info says the Rule is not going to change
Agreed but it has taking many casualties too, due to it's "suddeness" and draconian type implementation.Chunky wrote: Perhaps these new rules have done us all a favour. We have only every considered Rotax as a power plant.
Lastly on the "crap" flying, I haven't seen any aircraft like that and those with high hours were ironically "cleaner". The only "crap" I've seen that needs tiding up are AP's and CAA.

A member with INSIDE INFORMATION....
Has your 462 had it's carbs redone besides the impending crank? Did you service it yourself? Are you allowed to service your own engines?
Well with regards to your explicit inside info - AE is going to lose a lot of business... that is so sad but don't worry Mike there are chaps like Chunky that will ja & amen to totalatarian rules - me, alike others are a none conformist just because I know in this case it is the right thing to do!
Yes, thank goodness there are other options available! I just hope that advisors to CAA don't get a bright spark hat wakes them up and gets O2 to their starving brains & shift the goal post as so many other things in this screwed up country of ours!
A simple little word springs to mind :
SOLIDARITY and the lack of it!
What happened to an injury to one is an injury to all?
Well, not long to go and we'll know if your inside info is correct and what we other plebs have to do.....

Tell me, how does the Sport Cruiser fly... if I remember correctly, you purchased one or intended to!
Does it have a transponder?
Does it have TCAS?
Your plane is also NTCA is it not?
Purely curiousity : Didn't you cycle seriously at some stage of your life?

If you need to do something to your engine, this is the way to go, but please, do not TBO your rotax. Give CAA and AE the finger. You can pick the one of your own choice.Chunky wrote:Not really as I am probably going to toss the 462 and fit an HKS.BAD NAV wrote:... that is so sad but don't worry Mike there are chaps like Chunky that will ja & amen to totalatarian rules.....

Thanks chunky.
Unfortunately this forum does not allow me to use the words I would like to use to describe my feelings towards Mike Blythe and Mike Cathro and a couple of other people. The money I was saving to buy a ballistic and a new wing is now going into the new engine. I am very disgusted with and very disappointed by these people.
I just feel sorry for all those pilots who are going to have to hang up their wings because they simply can't afford it. And you guys are welcome to use my plane once it has the new engine.
These people are destroying one of the few great things we had left in the country. I just hope none of these big guys get hold of the hks contract
