Hi Swiftprop,
Thanks for the offer,
I have had an e-mail exchange with Carl during Saturday and Sunday.
I basically asked him where his kit stood with CAA with regard to the testing of wing structures as seen to have been complied with by Saplanes-Bushbaby, Micro Aviation-Cubby, Whisper Aircraft and probably everybody else that is offering kits.
Carl has informed me that he has submitted calculations (He is a Professional Engineer) as proof of the soundness of his wing spar. as well as of other structural components (as I understand it)
He is also busy with CAA to get the Raven kit exempted from any further physical loading tests.
Material strengths are a known quantity and since Carl buys the material he has full quality control of the components that go out of his door.
(
As an aside professional engineers need to sign any building plan submitted to any municipality in South Africa signifying that he/she/they have CALCULATED that the roof and/or structure is safe against all known climatic and atmospheric as well as geological conditions that have historically been encountered in that particular region.
The Municipality does not come and load 100 tons of cement bags on your roof to "Test the integrity"
This is Carls argument,
1.
Proof loading is 1910 technology whereas calculations are now the accepted and ruling norm. He also says that in the absence of any calculations , proof loading is then the only remaining option to test a structure.
2.
There are already a good number (I dont know the exact number) of Ravens flying in South Africa without any structural problems and this in itself is a testament to the Ravens structural integrity.
I personally am happy to buy a kit from Carl because he has a track record of fair dealings and integrity but CAA requirements are another story and Carl has no control over any additional test requirements that might suddenly make an aircraft "safer".
He has answered all my questions and am basically waiting for an final outcome between him and CAA which I dont think will be long in coming.
Kind regards,
Gunter Rostek.
