Thank you RVforker and Cobra for your very usefull posts. RV I will definitely look into the cheaper King option, I agree that at this stage R15k is over the top for a nice to have but not absolutely nescessary item.
Cobra, thanks for the gen, I will try to talk to a FAKN controller by phone. BTW, as I understand it FAKN has only one controller handeling approach and airodrome on the same freq.

Hi Mogas

Long time no see, although I did see you over Pyramid last weekend.

I highly recommend the installation of a transponder, it makes the cross country trips much easer and also allows you access to some of the bigger CTR’s like Durban. (What a privilege to be instructed to keep 500ft or below, east of the shoreline!!!!)

I have the Garmin GTX327 fitted in my JK-05 and find it easy to use.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Arnulf and Mogas,

A pleasure, lastly, if you want to be an ATC best friend get a transponder it works wonders. Pity there is no place in the trike.

Joke, actually a true story

If an ATC request you of squawk it is called "kekkel" in Afrikaans. Kekkel also means you're a chatter box in Afrikaans.

So the farmer gets himself a brand new transponder that will satisfy the Hoedspruit ATC for him to fly though the airspace to his farm.

The first morning everything installed and code 2000 set on the transponder his off to the Hoedspruit to show off with the new equipment.

On approaching the airspace he calls the ATC for an inbound clearance

Farmer 8) : "Hoedspruit ZS-ABC binnewaards op 6000ft versoek klaring .....($$) "
ATC : "ABC kekkel jy"
Farmer  : "nee ek sê maar net"

Cheers Sias

Couldn't agree more. However a panel mount radio with a stronger signal would be a higher priority for me.
I believe that with our little handheld radios we very often do not "break" through the squelch of our heavier brothers, thus some of them classifying us as monkeys that do not transmit. Also the weak signal must be frustrating for the ATC.
But this is another topic.

Regards,
Arnulf
