Back into gyro's

Postby FO Gyro » Tue Oct 18, 2016 5:24 pm

After a 4 year sabbatical from gyro's, I bought myself a very nice M24 Orion. Am really pleased with it. It's Len's previous gyro, ZU-RJR. Flew her down from Jnb 2 weeks ago. Took off from Springs in a howling wind, with the mine dumps leaving a trail of dust. Very comfortable trip in an enclosed gyro. Stopped over at Gariep. Total flying time was 11H40. Bit quicker than the usual 1:50 we normally do it in the Airbus A320! Makes me really appreciate how far aviation has come.

Always liked open gyro's, but not being battered by the wind is great. Having the flexibility to take the doors off for those 40C days we get here in the Cape is a big plus. Overall, a stunning gyro.

Why has Gyro Talk been so quiet? Have people lost interest in learning, and sharing info?

(^^) welcome back Glen!

Yep closed gyro's are nice, pity I missed you at FAFK the other day, I understand our love of AP's could have had us downing a few cold ones.

Congrats on the purchase

Please let us know your fuel burn doors off doors on, and MAP at given speeds, Im curious, I just completed the exercise in the pregnant guppy the Xenon, the agents and the manufacturer could not help in any way with that data :(

Look fwd to hearing you in the sky soon

fly safe

Thanks Greg. With the pitch set to the Highveld, I burnt on average 19-20l/hr, with power settings of around 29" and 5100 RPM. True Air Speed around 78 mph (125km/h). Indicated was 70 mph.

Now that the pitch is set correctly for down here, I'll get back to you with some figures for the coast.
